What each player can do here

P1 · Player 1
  • Runs two of the four heroes on the field: one Joy-Con or a Pro Controller each, on the same Switch.
P2 · Player 2
  • Runs the other two heroes. Friendly fire is on, so a stray shot can hit the partner's heroes.

If your skill levels differ: The fights are turn-based, so a newer player can take each move at their own pace; the mode is built around the two players talking through and syncing their turns. How to split the roles

Finding the co-op mode

Part 1 of 2. Start a two-player campaign.

  1. BothCo-op is a separate mode with its own maps, apart from the single-player campaign.
  2. BothGo to the Buddydome at Peach's Castle to pick a co-op campaign.
  3. BothEach story world you finish adds that world's co-op campaign; the first opens once Ancient Gardens is done.
  4. BothPlay on one console: a single Joy-Con per player works, two Pro Controllers too. There is no online co-op.

How a co-op map works

Part 2 of 2. Know what each map asks of the two teams.

  1. BothInstead of one squad of three, each player brings a pair of heroes, so four heroes share the battlefield.
  2. BothEvery map has a single goal: get your team to its marked zone, defeat a given number of enemies, or escort Toad and Toadette to safety.
  3. BothClearing a whole campaign unlocks its Hard setting.

Where people tend to fall

  • Friendly fire is on: a shot or blast can catch your partner's heroes.
  • Easy and Normal are open from the start.
