What each player can do here

P1 · Player 1
  • Portal builder: needs the diamond pickaxe for obsidian and the flint and steel to light the frame.
P2 · Players 2–4
  • Blaze hunter: blazes fly, throw fireballs and come in groups, so a bow or plenty of cover blocks help.

Building the portal

Part 1 of 2. Get obsidian and light a portal frame.

  1. Player 1Mining obsidian takes a diamond pickaxe, so finding diamonds comes first.
  2. Player 1Build an upright obsidian frame, 4 blocks across and 5 high at minimum.
  3. Player 1The four corners are optional, so 10 obsidian is enough for a working frame.
  4. Player 1Light the inside of the frame with flint and steel.
  5. Player 1Flint and steel is crafted from an iron ingot and a piece of flint, which drops from mined gravel.
  6. BothOther way: obsidian can also be made in place by pouring water onto a lava source block.

Blaze rods from a fortress

Part 2 of 2. Collect enough blaze rods for the eyes of ender.

  1. BothBlazes are found in Nether fortresses, often around a monster spawner, so search the Nether for a fortress.
  2. Players 2–4A killed blaze can drop a blaze rod, but not every kill does, so plan on fighting several.
  3. BothEach blaze rod crafts into two blaze powder.
  4. Players 2–4Blazes are immune to fire and fly; arrows and swords work, and snowballs hurt them too.

Good to know

  • Blazes attack any player within 48 blocks and alert others nearby, so expect more than one at a time.
