What each player can do here

P1 · Mario

Mario: all the running, jumping and captures. There are no lives; when Mario is defeated he drops 10 coins and goes back into the level.

P2 · Cappy

Cappy: flies freely but only within a set range of Mario, jumps and ground-pounds on its own, clears hazards off the ground, and can give Mario about a second of float once per jump.
Until Player 2 presses a button, Cappy simply hovers above Mario's head, and it keeps moving even while Mario is inside a capture.

If your skill levels differ: The newer player takes Cappy: it cannot get lost, because it stays within range of Mario and simply rides on his head until moved. The Cappy player's clearest way to help is the float boost, once per jump. How to split the roles

Hat stack: Throw Cappy at the stack of hats on his head until every hat is gone; the loose hats bounce around the ring, so jump on them or knock them away.
Bare head: With no hats left he is dazed: jump on his head. He then hides in one of his spinning hats; hit the right one to bring him out and repeat.
