How to split the roles
When one of you plays more than the other: who takes which seat in Super Mario Odyssey, and why.
Mario (Player 1)
Mario carries the platforming; Cappy is tied to a radius around Mario.
Cappy (Player 2)
Cappy hovers over Mario until Player 2 chooses to move, and stays within a radius of Mario, so the newer player cannot get lost.
Skill-gap friendly · higher is easier
4out of 5
A separate support role for Player 2; no source says Cappy cannot be hurt.
Official help aimed at a weaker or newer player: assist or beginner mode, a support seat, a way to carry or rescue a partner, or a game built for young children. No sourced invulnerability.
Easy to coordinate · higher is easier
2out of 3 · Medium
The float boost works best when Cappy times it with Mario's jumps.
Medium: regular hand-offs, timed moves together or shared decisions.
The roles Different jobs
Player 1 is always Mario; Player 2 is always Cappy.
Mario (Player 1) Moderate
Moderate seat: platforming and timing. Suits the more experienced player.
Does all the platforming and progression.
- Platforming
- Timing
Cappy (Player 2) Light
Light seat: aim and timing. Suits the newer player.
Flies near Mario, attacks and Ground Pounds independently, can give Mario a short float.
- Aim
- Timing
Help for the newer player
- Player 2 controls Cappy, a helper tied to Mario.
- Cappy can give Mario about one second of float once per jump.
If one of you fails: When Mario is defeated he loses 10 coins and returns to the level; no source covers Cappy.
Ways to split the work
- The Cappy player can give Mario about one second of float once per jump; it resets when Mario stomps an enemy.
- If the newer player is not ready to steer Cappy, Cappy simply hovers over Mario until they press the button.
