What each player can do here

P1 · Hero 1
  • Aloy and her bow from the start; Varl (spear), Teersa (bombs) and Erend (hammer) join as the story unlocks them. Heroes only gain levels while you play them.
P2 · Hero 2
  • The same heroes to pick from. The camera is shared, with no split screen, and if you drift too far behind the game pulls you back to your partner. Until Rost dies early in the story, the second player can play as him.

If your skill levels differ: A fall costs nothing, since a broken hero just rebuilds; only losing every heart in a fight sends you back to the start of that section. Our suggestionFor a mixed pair: Story difficulty or the Player Invulnerability option. PowerPyx says no trophy depends on difficulty, and PSNProfiles recommends exactly that setup. How to split the roles

Prologue (one player)

Part 1 of 3. Finish the opening alone to open co-op.

  1. BothThe prologue is a one-player tutorial; co-op opens once it is done. GamesRadar puts it at about 15 minutes.
  2. BothIts first machine fight is against a few Broadheads.single source
  3. BothTo join, connect a second controller and press the button shown in the bottom-right corner (Options on PlayStation). Co-op is drop-in, drop-out, so nobody has to leave the level.

The story levels

Part 2 of 3. Rescue the captured Nora.

  1. BothChapter 1 has six story levels, and each finished level gives a Gold Brick.
  2. BothThe levels: (1) Into the Woods, (2) Head in the Clouds, (3) Cult Following, (4) Face to the Sun, (5) A Strange Detour, (6) A Girl and Her Destiny.
  3. BothFinish Face to the Sun to unlock Varl, whose spear can hit several weak points if you throw it right.
  4. BothFinish A Girl and Her Destiny, the last level, to unlock Teersa and her bombs.
  5. BothYou also climb a Tallneck and pass through a first Cauldron. That Cauldron does not count toward the Cauldron trophy.
  6. BothHalfway through most levels, the Mysterious Trader offers three free chests, each holding a weapon or a gadget.single source

Corruptor (Teersa rescue)

Part 3 of 3. Beat the scorpion machine.

  1. BothKeep your distance and keep moving: hit the Corruptor from range, and go in right after a slam or a missile barrage, when it slows down for a moment.single source

Boss

CorruptorThe chapter's big machine

  1. Missiles: It opens by firing clusters of missiles that spread over large parts of the floor.single source
  2. Charge: It charges and slams its legs down, sending out shockwaves that knock you over up close.single source

Extras and notes

  • There are 100 Gold Bricks: 23 come from the story levels, the rest mostly from Community Jobs in Mother's Heart. Jay's Brick Blog also counts 16 Red Bricks.
  • There is no chapter select, so replaying one mission means replaying the story.
