What each player can do here

P1 · Mario
  • Player 1 is Mario: explores the islands, collects the Cat Shines and becomes Giga Cat Mario for the big fights.
P2 · Bowser Jr.
  • Player 2 is Bowser Jr.: attacks with his paintbrush and a clown-car slam, paints in graffiti to get Mario extra power-ups, and stores power-ups for him.

If your skill levels differ: Nintendo describes Bowser Jr. as the helper who attacks enemies and stores power-ups, the lighter job; Mario does all the platforming, so the more experienced player usually takes Mario. How to split the roles

Cat Shines

Part 1 of 2. Reach 40 and then 50 Cat Shines.

  1. BothAfter three wins the Wasteland and its bell appear. The bells now need 40 Cat Shines, then 50.

Where people tend to fall

  • Every few minutes Fury Bowser rises and rampages: it rains, spikes fall and he fires beams across the lake. Walls and island cover protect you.

Third fight and the chase

Part 2 of 2. Beat Fury Bowser and chase him down.

  1. MarioFight him as before: shelter from his fire behind islands, throw falling spikes back at him and ground-pound him when he is down.
  2. MarioWhen his health runs out he turns into plain giant Bowser, takes the Giga Bells and flees. Ride Plessie after him and ram the ball holding the bells whenever he stops.

Where people tend to fall

  • He now also fires a spread of fireballs and rocks; dodge the fire and kick the rocks back at him.

  1. Fury Bowser: Cover, thrown spikes and ground-pounds, as in the earlier fights.
  2. The chase: On Plessie, dodge his fire and ram the bell holder.
