What each player can do here

P1 · Player 1
  • Player 1 plays a Yoshi with the full move set: flutter jump, ground pound, eat enemies and throw eggs. The camera mostly follows Player 1.
  • When the partner rides on your back, you steer both Yoshis and your ground pound sends out a shockwave, but you cannot throw eggs until the rider jumps off.
P2 · Player 2
  • Player 2 is a second Yoshi in another colour with the same moves. Either Yoshi can eat the other and spit them out.
  • Jump onto Player 1's back to ride: you give up moving, but you can throw eggs without running out.

If your skill levels differ: The rider does no moving and never runs out of eggs, while the carrier handles the jumps. Mellow Mode (wings for endless flutter, only one heart lost per hit) can be switched on at any time, even mid-level.Our suggestionFor a newer player: ride on the other Yoshi's back. How to split the roles

Sunshine Station, Yarrctopus Docks and Go-Go Land

Part 1 of 3. Learn the moves and reach Big Paper Peak.

  1. BothSunshine Station has a single tutorial level, Rail-Yard Run; the rest of the opening path is one world after another with no choice of route.
  2. BothGo-Go Yoshi puts you in a giant Yoshi mech that punches through obstacles; it is a score-based challenge level.

Where people tend to fall

  • One reviewer found that riding kicks in automatically when you land near each other, and that it is easy to swallow your partner instead of an enemy, which makes dangerous or timed sections harder in co-op.

Yarrctopus (Pirate Pier mini-boss)

Part 2 of 3. Beat the pirate octopus at the end of Pirate Pier.

  1. BothYarrctopus moves behind three panels on his ship and bursts through one to drop spiked balls. Hit him with an egg in the moment he is exposed, before the panel comes back up.
  2. BothThree egg hits beat him. After the first, rocks rise from the water and block some shots, so wait for a clear line.

The Tin-Can Condor (Big Paper Peak boss)

Part 3 of 3. Win the first Dream Gem.

  1. BothMousers and Magnets, just before the boss, teaches the magnet: eat it, spit it out, and use it as a platform or a weight.
  2. BothIn the fight, spit the magnet at the Condor. It crashes to the ground and loses its crown: ground-pound its head.
  3. BothLater rounds add more spiked eggs, paper planes from above and little Mousers; one of the Mousers carries the next magnet, so take it from that one. Three hits win the blue Dream Gem.
  4. BothThe boss level needs 15 Smiley Flowers.

Boss

YarrctopusThe mini-boss

  1. Panels: Bursts through one of three panels to drop spiked balls; egg him while he is exposed.
  2. Rocks: After a hit, rocks in the water block shots; three hits in all.

Tin-Can CondorThe world boss

  1. Round 1: Spit the magnet at it, then ground-pound its head once its crown falls off.
  2. Round 2: More spiked eggs and paper planes; take the magnet from a Mouser.
  3. Round 3: Spiked eggs in more colours, more planes and Mousers; the third hit ends it.

Extras and notes

  • In co-op, only one of the two Yoshis has to end a level with 20 hearts to get that level's heart Smiley Flower.
