What each player can do here

P1 · Leader
  • The camera follows whoever is making progress at the front; give that seat to the player who knows the stage.
P2 · Partner
  • A partner who falls off the screen can warp back to the leader, so lagging behind costs nothing.

If your skill levels differ: Let the stronger player lead. The newer player can drop in and out at any time and warps back to the front when left behind. How to split the roles

Act 1: the sea creature

Part 1 of 2. Outrun it to the end of the act.

  1. BothThe first 'boss' is a chase: a big mechanical sea creature breaks up the ground behind you, so keep running right and jump the gaps.

Act 2: Eggman

Part 2 of 2. Beat the first Eggman machine.

  1. BothWhen he leaps, run under him to the other side and hit him from behind after he lands.
  2. BothHis rocket arms or mines stick in the ground; jump on one to send it back at him.
  3. BothIn the flying phase, jump on his head when he swoops low.

Boss

Dr. Eggman (Bridge Island)The first zone boss

  1. Leaping slam: Spins his arms, leaps and lands where you stood.
  2. Rocket arms: Fires his arms; a stuck arm can be bounced back at him.
  3. Flying machine: Switches to a flyer and charges low.
  • Sonic Retro lists six hits to beat him in Story Mode.

Extras and notes

  • The Avatar Emerald Power sends clones at everything on screen; several guides use it to finish bosses faster.
  • Up to four players run the whole campaign together on one screen, and anyone can drop in or out.
  • There are no lives: a fall sends you back to the start of the act or the last checkpoint.
  • Giant gold rings lead to Special Stages; each Chaos Emerald won there gives an Emerald Power, recharged at checkpoints.
  • Sonic Retro: a player who dies cannot respawn during a boss fight.
