What each player can do here

P1 · Cody
  • Sap gun: Cody coats targets, enemies and objects with sticky sap.
P2 · May
  • A launcher that sets the sap off: whatever Cody has covered, May can blow up.

If your skill levels differ: You keep the same character for the whole game, so pick once: IGN's guide gives May most of the precise aiming, platforming and fighting from The Tree on, so the more experienced player usually takes May. How to split the roles

Fresh Air

Part 1 of 5. Climb into the tree and get your weapons from the squirrels.

  1. BothGrapple across the hooks with RB or R1, then pull the red bar to get inside the tree.
  2. BothThe squirrels ask you to fight the wasps and arm you: Cody with the sap gun, May with the launcher.

Captured

Part 2 of 5. Work through the wasp-held tunnels and break into the vault.

  1. BothThe rule for the whole chapter: Cody sticks sap on the yellow targets, May sets it off.
  2. BothAt the hanging cage, Cody's sap drops it, you both climb in and May's shot lifts it.
  3. BothAt the vault, sap the yellow wood and have May shoot the wheel. Wasps pour out, followed by a bigger wasp with a shield.
  4. BothIn the first fight, Cody covers the wasps in sap and May blows them up.
  5. BothOn the cart ride past the flags, Cody shoots the flags ahead and May hits the ones that pass behind.

Deeply Rooted

Part 3 of 5. Get through the larvae nest, down the river and past the beetle.

  1. BothLarvae and the hanging bottles go the same way: sap first, then May's shot. Breaking the last bottle brings a wasp that drops bombs from above.
  2. BothOn the raft, Cody steers by shooting sap in the opposite direction while May clears the larvae.
  3. BothAgainst the giant beetle, Cody fills the four grates with sap and May fires when the beetle runs over them.
  4. BothRiding the beetle afterwards, Cody steers and jumps while May shoots the larvae that fall.

Where people tend to fall

  • The bomb-dropping wasp keeps moving overhead; watch its shadow and dodge before May fires.

Extermination

Part 4 of 5. Bring down the wasp queen.

  1. BothRide the rail round to the back of the queen; Cody fills the two red X marks with sap and May shoots them.
  2. BothIn the second phase, dodge the swarms and the fire from behind by riding the rail, then jump the bar and avoid the bombing run.
  3. BothAt the end the floor falls away: clear the swarms and blow up the chain that holds the queen.

Getaway

Part 5 of 5. Fly out of the tree.

  1. BothIn the plane, Cody flies and boosts while May works the gun on the turrets and the moss rings.
  2. BothAt the very end, both of you hang under the wing of the glider and lean left or right together.

  1. Phase 1: From behind, Cody saps the two red marks and May detonates them.
  2. Phase 2: Dodge the swarms on the rail, then destroy the chain at the end.

  1. The fight: It charges a few times; dash aside, then Cody saps it and May shoots it while it is covered.

Minigames in The Tree

Optional head-to-head games for the two of you; each counts toward the minigame achievement.

  • Tug of War

    Where: Captivity, in the cave at the top of the wall climb.

    Grab the rope with Y or Triangle and pull.

  • Plunger Dunger

    Where: Deeply Rooted, straight ahead after the floating fish.

    Aim a plunger turret with the right stick and charge your shot with RT or R2.

Achievements and extras

  • Struck a Pose: use the camera at the little diorama in Deeply Rooted to take a photo of the other player.
  • Fried Friendship is in the Captured part.
