Bread and Fred Local Co-op: 2 Penguins, One Console, $14.99

Bread and Fred local co-op seats 2 on one console: Xbox lists local co-op 2-2 with its split-screen label, Nintendo 1-2. Online works too, also for 2.

TL;DR: Xbox lists local co-op 2-2 and online co-op 2-2 with its Shared/split screen label. Nintendo lists Single system (1-2) and Online (1-2). The penguins are tied together, so one slip drags both down. $14.99 regular price on Xbox and Switch. Checked Oct 24, 2026.

Two penguins, one console, one rope. Bread and Fred local co-op seats two players on the same console on Xbox and Switch, so the question for most pairs is only whether your patience matches the climb.

As of Oct 24, 2026: Xbox and Nintendo pages re-read that day; Steam fields from our Oct 18 store data. The Bread & Fred game page shows the latest check.

Key Takeaways

  • Two on one console. Xbox local co-op 2-2; Nintendo Single system (1-2).
  • Online for two, too. Xbox online co-op 2-2; Nintendo Online (1-2).
  • Tied together. Nintendo's text: the penguins "are attached to each other".
  • Solo is possible. One player can steer both, per Nintendo's text.
  • Cheap. $14.99 regular price on Xbox and Switch.

Bread and Fred local co-op? (quick answer)

Yes, for two. Bread & Fred lists two players on one console on both console stores we read. The Xbox listing sums it up: "Bread & Fred is a challenging co-op platformer where two players must cooperate to jump and climb to the top of a snowy mountain."

Four store rows for Bread & Fred: Xbox local co-op 2-2 with the Shared/split screen label, Steam with the label, Nintendo Single system 1-2, PlayStation not in our store data Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Xbox, Steam and Nintendo stores, checked Oct 24.

Xbox and Steam print the Shared/split screen label. That label covers split screen and shared screen alike, so it does not tell you how the TV is divided. Our split screen vs shared screen explainer covers the difference.

Overview

Sand Castles Studio made it. Atari publishes it on Xbox and Switch, through Infogrames on Xbox, per the two store listings. It reached Switch on May 23, 2024, and Xbox in February 2026.

The developer explains the switch of publisher on its blog. Infogrames, "a subsidiary of Atari", handles "the publishing and distribution of Bread & Fred on Xbox and PlayStation." Before that, Sand Castles says Apogee Entertainment published the game.

Desk note: Our under-$20 couch co-op list holds 86 games. Only 23 of them stop at exactly two seats on one console, and Bread & Fred is one; 43 seat three or more. At $14.99 it is a cheap pick for a pair, and the wrong one for a party.

Analysis

The rope is the whole design. Nintendo's store text says "Bread and Fred are attached to each other. That means you don’t only fall together, but you can make good use of momentum to swing and propel each other". Shacknews puts it in one line: "you’re also tied together by a rope, forcing cooperation and teamwork into every puzzle."

GODEEPER: Two-player picks for partners of different skill. Co-op games for different skill levels

Online play exists, despite what some co-op databases say. The Xbox store lists online co-op 2-2 and Nintendo lists Online (1-2). Sand Castles' own guide says one player "needs to select a file, go to multiplayer, and hit the: "Host Online" button."

Bar chart of ways to play Bread & Fred: two on the same console, two online, one player steering both penguins solo Chart: CouchCoopDesk, from the Xbox and Nintendo listings, checked Oct 24.

Solo is allowed. Nintendo lists Single system (1-2), and its text says "Play as both Bread and Fred". So one person steers both penguins. The Geekly Grind's review still points to the sofa: you can "invite a friend over to join you for the traditional couch co-op experience."

Tips for a two-player climb

  • Agree on an anchor. Nintendo's text warns: "Make sure one of you anchors down to the ground or you’ll both fall!"
  • Pick one console. Online play is listed, but the stores do not list crossplay between brands.
  • Check the price. Both console stores list $14.99 regular; sales come and go.

What players say

A Steam discussion thread on the game is titled "I tried Bread & Fred with my friend, and I'm not sure we're still speaking". Its opening post adds: "I've never laughed and wanted to throw my controller at the same time so much in my life." That is the review in one line.

Our take

Pick Bread & Fred for a patient pair on one console; skip it for three or more. Xbox lists local co-op 2-2 and Nintendo Single system (1-2). At $14.99 regular, it is one of 23 two-seat games on our under-$20 list.

Families with a third player should look at our 4-player local games list. We will re-check once a PlayStation listing shows in our store data.

What we don't know yet

The PlayStation player count and price. Sand Castles says Atari publishes the game there, but our store data has no PlayStation row yet. We also could not read a current Steam page from our network.

How we checked this

We re-read the Xbox catalog entry and the Nintendo Switch listing on Oct 24, along with two Sand Castles Studio blog posts and reviews from Shacknews and The Geekly Grind. Steam fields come from our importer's Oct 18 read. The Steam forum lines come from search results, since Steam pages do not load from our network. We did not play Bread & Fred for this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bread and Fred local co-op? Yes, for two players. The Xbox store lists local co-op 2-2 and its Shared/split screen label, and Nintendo lists Single system (1-2) on Switch. Our Steam data shows Local co-op with the Shared/Split Screen label. Both players control one penguin each, tied together by a rope.

Does Bread and Fred have online co-op? Yes, for two. The Xbox store lists online co-op 2-2 and Nintendo lists Online (1-2). Sand Castles Studio's own guide explains that one player picks a save file, opens multiplayer and presses Host Online. Some third-party co-op databases say no online play; the stores and the developer say otherwise.

Can you play Bread and Fred solo? Yes. Nintendo lists Single system (1-2), so one player is allowed, and its store text says you can play as both Bread and Fred. That means one person steers both penguins. The Xbox store lists co-op from two players, and the game is pitched as a two-player climb.

Is Bread and Fred on PlayStation? The developer, Sand Castles Studio, says Infogrames, a subsidiary of Atari, publishes and distributes Bread & Fred on Xbox and PlayStation. Our store data has no PlayStation row for it, so we cannot quote a PlayStation player count or price. Check the PlayStation Store listing before buying.

How much is Bread and Fred? $14.99 regular price on the Xbox store and on Nintendo's Switch listing, checked Oct 24. Nintendo showed a sale that day; we quote the regular price only. Our Steam data from Oct 18 also shows $14.99. It sits on our under-$20 couch co-op list.

Does Bread and Fred have split screen? The Xbox store prints its Shared/split screen label, and Steam's Shared/Split Screen category is in our data. Both stores use one label for split screen and shared screen, so the label alone does not say which. Two players do play on one console, tied together by a rope.
