It Takes Two Local Co-op: Split Screen for 2, Switch 2 Too

It Takes Two local co-op is split screen for two on one console, no internet needed. The Switch 2 version arrived Oct 15; one copy covers two online.

TL;DR: Xbox lists local co-op 2-2 with its Shared/split screen label. Nintendo lists Single system (2) and describes "couch or online co-op with split-screen play" on Switch 2. EA says couch co-op needs no internet. Even online, each screen stays split in two. Checked Oct 24, 2026.

Two people on one sofa is the whole point. It Takes Two local co-op runs split screen on one console with no internet, and the only real choice left is which store, since the Switch 2 version arrived on Oct 15.

As of Oct 24, 2026: Xbox, Nintendo and PlayStation pages re-read that day; Steam fields from our Oct 18 store data. The It Takes Two game page shows the latest check.

Key Takeaways

  • Two players, one screen. Every store stops at two.
  • No internet for the couch. EA says couch co-op works offline.
  • Online stays split. Each player still sees both halves.
  • One copy online. The Friend's Pass covers the second player.
  • New on Switch 2. Out Oct 15, $39.99, crossplay with the big three.

It Takes Two local co-op? (quick answer)

Yes. It Takes Two is built for two people, and every store we read lists two seats on one console. EA's FAQ is blunt about the offline part: "Yes, no internet connection is required to play couch co-op."

Four store rows for It Takes Two: Xbox local co-op 2-2 with the Shared/split screen label, Steam with the label, Nintendo Switch 2 with split-screen in its text, PlayStation 1-2 players Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Xbox, Steam, Nintendo and PlayStation stores, checked Oct 24.

Three stores print the word. Xbox and Steam carry the Shared/split screen label. Nintendo has no screen field, but its Switch 2 text says "Choose from couch or online co-op with split-screen play". Our split screen vs shared screen explainer covers what each label means.

Overview

Hazelight made it and Electronic Arts publishes it, per the Xbox catalog. It reached Xbox in March 2021, Switch in November 2022 and Switch 2 on Oct 15 this year.

Notice the small gap. Nintendo prints Single system (2), not (1-2). The game does not seat one player on its own.

Desk note: Of the 222 games in our database that list a count on a console store, 75 stop at exactly two on one console. It Takes Two is one of them on every store. If three people are on the sofa, someone holds the snacks.

Bar chart of 222 console games in our database by most players on one console: 75 exactly two, 105 three or four, 20 more than four Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the official stores, checked Oct 18.

Analysis

The split never goes away. Inverse's review notes: "Even if you’re online, It Takes Two is permanently in split-screen mode." That matters for a small TV: each player always gets half of it, on the couch or not.

GODEEPER: More two-player picks, with each store's seat count. Couch co-op games for couples

Online, one copy is enough. EA's Friend's Pass page says it "lets you play It Takes Two with a friend even if they don't own the full game!" EA's FAQ adds that Friend's Pass is available on all platforms. Both players still need their platform's online subscription to play together online, per the same FAQ.

Crossplay covers most systems. EA lists cross-platform play on "Nintendo Switch 2", "PlayStation 4 and 5", "Xbox Series X and Xbox One", "Steam (PC)" and "Origin (PC)". The original Switch is the odd one out. EA says Switch 2 players can "either use Gameshare or the Switch 2 player can downgrade to the Switch 1 edition for free to play online with Switch 1."

On Switch 2, Nintendo lists GameShare with local users. Its text says: "Play together across platforms or use GameShare to connect with Nintendo Switch™ players." Two Switch 2 owners in one room can also use local wireless, which Nintendo lists for two.

What players say

The split screen is not optional, and players notice. In r/ItTakesTwo, a thread asking for a single-player option drew this reply in May 2026: "So do all the other versions. But it will still be split screen". Fair warning for anyone hoping for a full-screen view.

Our take

Buy It Takes Two for two people on one TV; any store works. Every store lists two seats on one console, and EA says couch co-op needs no internet. Price is $39.99 on Xbox and Switch 2.

Groups of three should skip it. Our Game Pass split screen games list has Xbox picks for more seats. We will re-check the Switch 2 listing after its first update.

What we don't know yet

Whether the original Switch version will join EA's crossplay list. For now, EA points Switch 2 owners to GameShare or the free Switch edition instead. We also could not read a current Steam page from our network.

How we checked this

We re-read the Xbox catalog entry, the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 listings and the PlayStation Store page on Oct 24, along with EA's FAQ and Friend's Pass page and Inverse's review. Steam fields come from our importer's Oct 18 read. The Reddit line was read through the Arctic Shift archive. We did not play It Takes Two for this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does It Takes Two have split screen? Yes. The Xbox store prints its Shared/split screen label and lists local co-op 2-2, our Steam data carries the same label, and Nintendo's Switch 2 listing says couch or online co-op with split-screen play. The PlayStation Store lists 1 - 2 players. Two is the limit everywhere.

Can you play It Takes Two couch co-op offline? Yes. EA's FAQ answers it directly: no internet connection is required to play couch co-op. Online play is different: EA says both players need their platform's online subscription, and the PlayStation Store lists PS Plus for its 2 online players.

Can It Takes Two be played solo? No store lists a one-player mode on Xbox or Nintendo. Xbox lists local and online co-op 2-2, and Nintendo lists Single system (2) on Switch and Switch 2. The PlayStation Store prints 1 - 2 players, but Xbox and Nintendo both set the minimum at two players.

Is It Takes Two crossplay? Yes, on most platforms. EA's FAQ lists cross-platform play on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox One, Steam and Origin. The original Switch is not on that list; EA says Switch 2 owners can use GameShare or a free Switch edition to play with it.

Does the second player need to own It Takes Two? Not online. EA's Friend's Pass page says it lets you play with a friend even if they don't own the full game, and EA's FAQ says it is available on all platforms. On one console, both players simply share the copy that is installed.

How much is It Takes Two? $39.99 regular price on the Xbox store and on Nintendo's Switch 2 listing, checked Oct 24. The PlayStation Store showed an original price of $39.99 and EA Play inclusion. Xbox listed it in Game Pass in our Oct 18 data, and our Steam data shows $39.99.
