Super Mario Bros. Wonder, one of the games in this guide.

Of the Switch 2 local co-op games we track, 14 stop at exactly two players on one console. Stardew Valley, the one most people would guess, is not on the list at all: Nintendo's Switch 2 listing gives it one player per system. Before you buy for a sofa, read the Single system line, not the box art.

TL;DR: 37 of the 42 Switch 2 listings in our database show two or more players on a single system; 22 reach four. The pair of Joy-Con 2 in the box counts as two controllers. Plug in Bluetooth headphones and the limit drops to two controllers. Checked Oct 18, 2026.

As of Oct 18, 2026: player counts, labels and prices as the stores listed them that day. Stores change listings; the finder shows the latest check.

Verdict: Pick Super Mario Bros. Wonder for a family of four, It Takes Two or Split Fiction for a couple, Unrailed 2 for a party of eight. Skip Stardew Valley for one-console play. Store pages checked Oct 18.

Key Takeaways

  • 37 of 42 Switch 2 listings in our data show 2+ players on a single system (finder view).
  • 22 reach four or more; 2 go to six or eight: Unrailed 2: Back on Track (8) and DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO (6).
  • One Joy-Con 2 is one controller. The pair in the box covers two players, per Nintendo's FAQ.
  • Three games list more seats on Switch 2 than on Switch, each going from two to four.
  • Stardew Valley lists one player per system on Switch 2; its extra players are local wireless or online.

Overview

Bar chart of Switch 2 listings by players on one console: 5 at one or none, 14 at two, 1 at three, 20 at four, 2 at six to eight Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from Nintendo's store listings, checked Oct 18, 2026.

Nintendo's store prints "No. of players" in three lines: Single system, Local wireless and Online. Only the first answers the sofa question: how many people can play on one Switch 2, on one screen, with one copy.

This list keeps every Switch 2 listing whose Single system number is two or more. It is the same rule as our Switch 2 couch co-op list, which updates when the stores do.

Two kinds of listing count here. Some games are sold only as Switch 2 versions, such as Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World. Others are Nintendo Switch 2 Editions or Switch 2 listings of older games, and Nintendo gives those their own player count and price.

Desk note: 5 of the 42 Switch 2 listings in our database show one player per system. All five still list online play for two or more, so they look like co-op games until you read the line that matters.

If the store's player count and the screen type are new terms, our explainer on split-screen vs shared-screen vs online co-op covers what each line means.

Switch 2 local co-op games: the 10 picks

The picks are games a store describes as co-op, ordered by the situation they suit. Every player count is Nintendo's Single system line for the Switch 2 listing.

1. Super Mario Bros. Wonder

  • On one console: 1-4 players (Switch 2 listing), the same 1-4 as the Switch version. Game page.
  • Why it is here: four seats, rated E, and Nintendo's own page says two characters "don't take damage from enemies", which helps a new player.
  • Pick it if: a family wants one game for everyone.
  • The catch: $79.99 regular price on the Switch 2 listing.

2. It Takes Two

  • On one console: 2-2 on Switch 2; the Xbox store carries its Shared/split screen label. Game page.
  • Why it is here: built for exactly two, and EA says no internet connection is needed for couch co-op.
  • Pick it if: two adults want a story.
  • The catch: rated T; $39.99 on the Switch 2 listing.

3. Split Fiction

  • On one console: 2-2 on Switch 2. Game page.
  • Why it is here: EA's page says "This split-screen adventure is tailored for two", and a Friend's Pass lets the second player join online without buying it.
  • Pick it if: you finished It Takes Two.
  • The catch: $49.99, rated T.

4. Unrailed 2: Back on Track

  • On one console: 1-8 on Switch 2, the widest count on this list. Game page.
  • Why it is here: eight seats for $19.99 at regular price.
  • Pick it if: you host parties.
  • The catch: eight players need eight controllers, which is the Switch 2's usual maximum.

5. Overcooked! 2

  • On one console: 1-4 on Switch 2, plus Local wireless (2-4). Game page.
  • Why it is here: four seats, rated E, $29.99.
  • Pick it if: you want short rounds.
  • The catch: the Switch 2 listing costs $5 more than the Switch one ($24.99).

6. Minecraft

  • On one console: 1-4 on Switch 2. Game page.
  • Why it is here: a store description in our data uses the word split-screen, one of only 24 games that do.
  • Pick it if: kids already play it.
  • The catch: rated E10+.

7. Marvel Cosmic Invasion

  • On one console: 1-4 on Switch 2. Game page.
  • Why it is here: the store text says drop-in play, so a player can join mid-game.
  • Pick it if: people come and go.
  • The catch: rated E10+; $29.99.

8. Super Mario Party Jamboree

  • On one console: 1-4 on Switch 2. Game page.
  • Why it is here: four seats and online play for up to 20 on the same listing.
  • Pick it if: you want a board-game night.
  • The catch: $79.99 on the Switch 2 listing, against $59.99 for the Switch version.

9. Sea of Stars

  • On one console: 1-3 on every console store we read. Game page.
  • Why it is here: the only three-player count on the Switch 2 list.
  • Pick it if: three of you want a role-playing game.
  • The catch: no online play listed.

10. Donkey Kong Bananza

  • On one console: 1-2, Switch 2 only. Game page.
  • Why it is here: a Switch 2 exclusive with a second seat.
  • Pick it if: you own only a Switch 2.
  • The catch: $69.99, and no online count listed.

Mario Kart World also lists 1-4 on a single system and Local wireless for up to eight, but it is a racing game the store does not describe as co-op. Nintendo's Mario Kart World Direct says four players "can race in split screen on the same system".

Analysis

Bar chart of Switch 2 listings with two or more players on each line: 37 single system, 18 local wireless, 32 online, of 42 Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from Nintendo's store listings, checked Oct 18, 2026.

The three lines rarely move together. Of 42 Switch 2 listings, 37 show two or more on a single system, 18 on local wireless and 32 online. Stardew Valley is the odd one: Single system (1), Local wireless (1-4), Online (1-8). Four friends can farm together, just not on one screen.

Switch 2 listings sometimes add seats the Switch version did not have. Brotato, Disney Speedstorm and Wobbly Life go from 2 on Switch to 4 on Switch 2. Others hold steady: Kirby and the Forgotten Land keeps 1-2 on both.

Hardware sets the real ceiling. Nintendo of America's controller FAQ says a Switch 2 connects up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances.

Four people can each use a left and a right Joy-Con 2. Connect a Bluetooth audio device and no more than two wireless controllers fit. Eight seats, one pair of headphones: pick one.

GameShare is the other lever. Nintendo says only one person needs the game to share it with friends in supported titles. Over local wireless, only a Switch 2 can share, but a Switch can receive (Nintendo's European GameShare page). Online, everyone needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

What players say

One player put the store tip plainly in r/NintendoSwitch2: "The nintendo store is actually useful with providing this information, when viewing info about a game, it will say local for couch co-op and/or online co-op only." Another, on a newer game: "It supports 4 player couch co-op." Both comments are from September 2026.

Our take

Pick Super Mario Bros. Wonder for four, It Takes Two for two, and read the Single system line first. 22 of the 37 games here seat four or more on one console. Stardew Valley shows why the line matters: one player per system on Switch 2.

If you own a Switch and a Switch 2, check both listings; three games in our data seat more on Switch 2. We re-read the Switch 2 listings with every weekly data refresh.

What we don't know yet

Nintendo's field does not say whether a game splits the screen or shares one view. Only 24 games in our whole database use the word split-screen in a store description, and Nintendo's field never does.

How we checked this

Player counts, prices and ratings come from Nintendo's US store listings, read by our importer on Oct 18 and kept in our database; the lists and the finder use the same data. Controller limits come from Nintendo of America's support FAQ; GameShare details from Nintendo's pages. Reddit comments were read through the Arctic Shift archive. We did not play these games for this list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Switch 2 games have local co-op? In our database, 37 of the 42 Switch 2 listings show two or more players on a single system in Nintendo's No. of players field. Fourteen stop at two and 22 reach four or more. The finder link above keeps the count current as the stores change.

Can two people play on one Switch 2 with the Joy-Con 2 in the box? Yes. Nintendo's controller FAQ says each Joy-Con 2 connects as its own controller, so the pair in the box counts as two. Held sideways, one Joy-Con 2 works alone. The game still has to list two or more players on a single system.

Does Stardew Valley have couch co-op on Switch 2? Not on one console, by Nintendo's listing. The Switch 2 Edition page shows Single system (1), Local wireless (1-4) and Online (1-8). Extra players need their own console in the room or an internet connection, plus a membership for online play.

Is local wireless the same as split-screen? No. Local wireless means each player has a console in the same room, connected without the internet. Nintendo prints it as a separate line from Single system, which is the count for one console and one screen. A game can list both lines with different numbers.

Do both players need Nintendo Switch Online for local co-op? No membership is needed to play together on one console. Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online features, and its GameShare page adds that everyone in an online GameShare session needs one. Local play skips all of that.

How many controllers can a Switch 2 connect? Nintendo of America's support FAQ says up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances. When a Bluetooth audio device is connected, no more than two wireless controllers can be connected. Four people can each hold a left and a right Joy-Con 2.
