Xbox Split Screen Games: 8 Picks From the 72 With the Label

Xbox split screen games: 72 of 132 couch games in our data carry the Xbox Shared/split screen label. Eight picks by sofa, and the four-seaters without it.

TL;DR: 72 of the 132 couch games in our Xbox data carry the store's Shared/split screen label. Pick Minecraft for four mixed ages, Split Fiction for two adults, Bluey: The Videogame for small kids, Don't Starve Together for six. Overcooked! 2 lists 2-4 seats and no label. Checked Oct 29, 2026.

Minecraft, one of the games in this guide.

Most Xbox split screen games in our database seat either two or four, and 32 couch games that seat four or more carry no label at all, Overcooked! 2 among them. Count your controllers first: the store's seat field decides more than the label does.

As of Oct 29, 2026: labels and seats as the Xbox store listed them in our database (Xbox rows checked Oct 18 to Oct 28), with every pick and four unlabelled games re-read on Oct 29. Stores change listings; the Xbox couch co-op list shows the latest check.

Verdict: Pick Minecraft if four people of mixed ages share one Xbox. Pick Split Fiction if two adults want a campaign. Pick Bluey: The Videogame if a young child is on the sofa: rated E, no online field. Skip Baldur's Gate 3 for a group of three: it seats two on one console. Store pages checked Oct 29.

Which Xbox games have split screen? (quick answer)

The Xbox store prints one capability for this, "Shared/split screen". In our database, 72 of the 132 Xbox games that list two or more players on one console carry it. The label covers a split view and one shared view alike, so it tells you that the couch works, not how the TV is divided.

Microsoft has its own filter for the label. Its Most played view showed 87 games on our read, opening with Gears of War: E-Day, and the grid has no player counts. Our set is narrower, couch games only, and every row carries the seat field.

Bar chart of Xbox couch games with the Shared/split screen label by seats: 33 of 58 two-seat games, 1 of 4 three-seat, 34 of 61 four-seat, 4 of 9 with five or more Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Xbox store, rows checked Oct 18 to Oct 28, 2026.

Xbox split screen games, by who is on the sofa

Each pick covers a different sofa, and every one carries the label on its Xbox listing, re-read on Oct 29. Prices are the store's regular prices that day.

1. Minecraft

Minecraft is the safest four-person pick on one Xbox: local co-op 2-4, online co-op 2-8 and an E10+ rating. At $19.99 regular, only two picks cost less.

2. Split Fiction

Split Fiction lists local co-op for exactly two and the same two online, with cross-platform co-op and no single-player field. EA's own page settles the screen question: "This split-screen adventure is tailored for two." $49.99 regular, rated T. Our Split Fiction split screen answer covers every other store's field.

3. Bluey: The Videogame

Bluey: The Videogame lists local co-op 2-4 and no online field at all, rated E. That makes it a couch game or nothing, which is the point for a family. $29.99 regular.

4. Don't Starve Together: Console Edition

Six co-op seats, the most among the picks. Don't Starve Together lists local co-op 2-6, but its local multiplayer field reads 2-2, so the six seats apply to the co-op mode the store names. $14.99, rated T.

5. Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime seats 2-4 in local co-op, rated E10+. At $14.99 it ties for the cheapest pick. The store lists no online play for it, so all four seats are on the sofa.

6. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

The racing pick. The listing in our data, the Year Two Digital Deluxe Edition released on the Xbox store on Oct 9, 2026, shows local multiplayer 2-4 and online multiplayer 2-12, rated E, $59.99. The store calls the local mode multiplayer, not co-op: you race each other. See the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds page for the other stores.

7. Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 lists local co-op 2-2 and online co-op 2-4, rated M, $69.99. Two players fit on one Xbox; a third or fourth friend has to join online. On a Series S, check the update: Larian lists "Xbox Series S Split Screen" among the additions in Patch 8.

8. Gears of War: E-Day

The newest pick, out on the Xbox store Oct 6. Gears of War: E-Day lists local co-op 2-2, online co-op 2-4 and online multiplayer 2-12, rated M, $69.99. The Gears of War: E-Day split screen answer has the PC side.

Four-seat games that do not print the label

Four well-known couch games print seats and no label. On our Oct 29 re-read, Overcooked! 2 listed local co-op 2-4, Moving Out 2 and Gang Beasts 2-4, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge 2-6. None carried Shared/split screen.

A missing label means the store does not describe the screen. The seat field still says two to six people can play on one Xbox. In our data, 32 of the 60 unlabelled couch games seat four or more.

Desk note: 64 of the 72 labelled games also have a Steam listing in our data. Steam prints its own Shared/Split Screen category on 52 of them; on the other 12 only Xbox prints it, among them Baldur's Gate 3, Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Diablo IV. For a PC player, an Xbox label is no promise of a couch mode on Steam.

Bar chart: of 64 labelled Xbox games with a Steam listing, Steam prints the split screen label on 52 and 12 carry it on Xbox only Chart: CouchCoopDesk, Xbox store rows checked Oct 18 to Oct 28 and our Steam data from Oct 18 to Oct 22, 2026.

Diablo 4 couch co-op shows how far that gap goes: two seats with the label on Xbox, no local category on Steam, and a Switch 2 listing that prints Single player.

Xbox split screen games for couples, kids, four players and racing

These are the searches people type, answered from the 72.

For couples, all 72 seat at least two. 26 of them list local co-op for exactly two, games built for a pair: Split Fiction, It Takes Two, A Way Out and Unravel Two are among them, and couch co-op games for couples compares them across stores.

For kids, 31 of the 72 are rated E and 19 are E10+. Bluey: The Videogame, PAW Patrol World and Biped 2 are rated E. Co-op games to play with kids adds the parental settings.

Bar chart of Xbox split screen games by ESRB rating: 31 E, 19 E10+, 11 T, 11 M, of 72 Chart: CouchCoopDesk, ESRB ratings from the Xbox store, rows checked Oct 18 to Oct 28, 2026.

For four players, 38 of the 72 seat four or more, and the Xbox finder filtered to four seats lists them with or without the label. For racing, 11 labelled games carry a racing tag, from Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled to Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged.

What players say

Two short lines from r/XboxGamePass, read through the Arctic Shift archive, match what the store fields promise. Under the Oct 6 post announcing Gears of War: E-Day on Game Pass, a 78-comment thread, one top-level comment reads: "Loving it in split screen so far". In a 72-comment thread from July 30 titled "Excited for months to play Halo with my kid only to find out...", a commenter wrote the next day: "Halo MCC was a blast as they are all split screen and only one MSFT account required."

Each is a single comment with one upvote on our read, so treat them as two players' experience. Both games carry the Shared/split screen label on the Xbox store, and Steam prints it for neither.

Our take

Start with Minecraft for four and Split Fiction for two; check the seat field before the label. Minecraft lists 2-4 on one Xbox for $19.99, and Split Fiction lists exactly two with cross-platform co-op.

Ignore this list if your group is three adults who want an M-rated campaign: Baldur's Gate 3 and Gears of War: E-Day both seat two on one console. Overcooked! 2 fans should not be put off by the missing label, since the seats are printed. The picks were re-read Oct 29; the list page shows each later check.

What we don't know yet

Which labelled games split the screen and which share one view. The Xbox store prints one label for both, and only a publisher page can settle it game by game; EA's does for Split Fiction.

How we checked this

Seats, labels and ratings for all 132 games come from our database's Xbox rows, read from the Microsoft Store catalog between Oct 18 and Oct 28. On Oct 29 we re-read the eight picks, Rocket League, Disney Speedstorm, Halo: The Master Chief Collection and four unlabelled games in the same catalog, plus Microsoft's Shared/split screen filter page, EA's Split Fiction page and Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 site. Prices are the catalog's regular price; Split Fiction was on sale that day. Steam fields come from our Steam data, read between Oct 18 and Oct 22. Reddit comments were read through the Arctic Shift archive after earlier searches timed out. We did not play these games for this list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there free split screen games on Xbox? Rocket League and Disney Speedstorm both listed a $0.00 price on the Xbox store on Oct 29, and both carry the Shared/split screen label. Rocket League lists local co-op 2-8 and local multiplayer 2-4; Disney Speedstorm lists local multiplayer 2-4. Both are rated E.

Do Xbox One split screen games work on Xbox Series X|S? Xbox says its current consoles let you enjoy the games you own and love from past generations at no additional cost. Of the 72 labelled games, 57 list both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in our data and 14 list Series X|S only, so those 14 need the newer console. Barbie Rewind has no console field in our data yet.

Do you need Game Pass for split screen on Xbox? The Xbox store ties Game Pass to online play only. Listings such as Split Fiction's print "Online multiplayer on console requires XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate (subscriptions sold separately)." Nothing on those pages ties a tier to the second controller on the same console.

Which Xbox split screen games have crossplay? 31 of the 72 labelled games list Xbox cross-platform co-op or multiplayer in our data, Minecraft, Split Fiction, Baldur's Gate 3, Rocket League and Gears of War: E-Day among them. The store prints the field as a label only; it does not say how a cross-platform session is set up, so check each game's own page.

Is Halo: The Master Chief Collection split screen on Xbox? The Xbox store says yes in its own terms: local co-op 2-2, local multiplayer 2-4 and the Shared/split screen label, rated M, $39.99 regular on Oct 29. Our Steam data shows no Shared/Split Screen category for it, so this is an Xbox answer, not a PC one.
