Diablo 4 Couch Co-op: 2 on Xbox and PS5, 1 on Switch 2

Diablo 4 couch co-op: two players on one Xbox or PS5, one per console on the Switch 2 version, none on PC. Store by store, plus what player two needs.

TL;DR: Xbox lists local co-op 2-2 with its Shared/split screen label; the PlayStation Store lists 1 - 2 players. Nintendo's Switch 2 listing, out Sep 15, prints Single player and an online label of 4+. Steam lists no local play. Online parties take 4. Checked Oct 29, 2026.

Diablo IV seats two on one Xbox or PlayStation, but the Switch 2 listing prints "Single player", so Diablo 4 couch co-op depends on the console under the TV. A Switch 2 household should plan on a second console or online play.

As of Oct 29, 2026: Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo pages re-read that day; Steam fields from our Oct 18 store data. The Diablo IV game page shows the latest check.

Diablo 4 couch co-op? (quick answer)

Yes on Xbox and PlayStation, for exactly two. No on PC. And on the Switch 2, the store says one player per console.

Store rows for Diablo IV: Xbox local co-op 2-2 with the Shared/split screen label, PlayStation 1 - 2 players, Switch 2 Single player, Steam no local category Chart: CouchCoopDesk, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo pages checked Oct 29; Steam store data Oct 18.

Blizzard picked the two-seat ceiling on purpose. In a 2020 update, it said the two-player setup was "an overwhelming majority" of Diablo III couch play, so it decided "to focus on improving the favored 2-player co-op experience".

Is Diablo 4 split screen, or one shared screen?

None of the sources we read says which. The Xbox store's Shared/split screen label covers both layouts. Blizzard's Rod Fergusson used the words "shared-screen co-op" in a Eurogamer interview, quoted by Windows Central and Dexerto, when he explained why PC lacks the mode: "Trying to do shared-screen co-op on PC is much more challenging when it comes to account management and how you play together." Neither describes the camera on a console.

What Blizzard's 2020 note does describe is the menus. In Diablo III, the complaint was that nobody could act while one local player had a menu open; Diablo IV's core progression screens "can be opened independently or at the same time".

The PC answer comes from the same quote. Our Steam data lists Online Co-op, Cross-Platform Multiplayer and Online PvP for Diablo IV, but no local co-op and no Shared/Split Screen category, and Windows Central and Dexerto both report couch co-op on consoles only. Borderlands 4 split screen splits the same way: two on a console, none on PC.

Diablo 4 couch co-op on Switch 2: what Nintendo lists

The Switch 2 version is the odd one out. Nintendo sells it as Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection, released Sep 15, 2026, with the base game and both expansions in one bundle. Its player-count data reads Single player on one system and an online label of 4+ (a maximum of 4 in the page data), with no local wireless line.

Bar chart of the most players each store lists for Diablo IV: 2 on Xbox, 2 on PS5, 1 on Switch 2, 0 local on Steam, 4 online on the console stores Chart: CouchCoopDesk, from the Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo listings, checked Oct 29.

Neither the store page nor Nintendo Australia's Sep 17 launch article mentions couch co-op. We found no Blizzard page saying it is coming to Switch 2, or saying it is not. For now, the listing's Single player is the answer on record.

Desk note: 23 Switch 2 games in our database also seat two or more on one Xbox or PS5. On just 2 of them the Switch 2 listing seats fewer: Goat Simulator 3 (2 against 4) and Diablo IV, the only one that drops to a single player. See the Switch 2 couch co-op list for the games that do keep a second seat.

Co-op on Switch 2 means one console per player. Each player needs their own console, a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play, and the internet. Nintendo's page says "Internet connection and Battle.net account required to play."

Starting a two-player session on Xbox or PS5

Windows Central describes the setup, and its one catch. Turn on a second controller while the game is running; player two signs in with an Xbox or PlayStation account, links it to a Battle.net account or makes one, then picks or creates a character and appears next to player one.

Player two does not need to own the game for couch co-op. The catch: "they won't be able to play on their own console without a copy of the game." Progress made on the sofa is saved to their account and carries over to other platforms through cross-progression, PC included.

What players say

The Switch 2 complaint we found on Blizzard's Diablo IV forums is about the connection. It opens a Console Bug Report thread, posted Sep 16: "My biggest problem with Diablo IV on Nintendo Switch 2 isn't the graphics, resolution, or even the 30/40 FPS target. It's the requirement to remain connected to the internet at all times." The thread had three posts on our read. Our Reddit archive search timed out, so there is no Reddit line here.

Our take

Buy Diablo IV on Xbox or PS5 for a two-player sofa; skip the Switch 2 version for that. Xbox lists local co-op 2-2 and PlayStation lists 1 - 2 players. Nintendo's listing for the same bundle prints one player per console.

A group of three or four should ignore the couch mode entirely: it stops at two everywhere, and only online play reaches four. We will re-read the Switch 2 listing if Blizzard or Nintendo announce local co-op for it.

What we don't know yet

Whether couch co-op is planned for the Switch 2 version. We found no Blizzard or Nintendo statement either way, and the store field is all there is.

How we checked this

We read the Xbox, PlayStation Store and Nintendo Switch 2 listings on Oct 29, plus Microsoft's catalog data for the regular prices. A 10% Switch 2 discount and an Xbox bundle sale ran that day; we quote the regular prices. Steam fields come from our importer's Oct 18 read. Blizzard's 2020 update, Windows Central and Dexerto supplied the two-player and PC answers. Blizzard's support pages timed out. We did not play Diablo IV for this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you play Diablo 4 couch co-op offline? No store we read offers it offline. The PlayStation Store prints "Online play required", and Nintendo's Switch 2 page and Blizzard's own site both say an internet connection and a Battle.net account are required to play. The PlayStation listing ties PS Plus to online play and says nothing about the second seat.

Is Diablo 4 on Game Pass? The base game is, on our Oct 29 read: the Xbox listing showed Diablo IV - Standard Edition as included with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. The Age of Hatred Collection, which adds both expansions, is a separate purchase at a $69.99 regular price on the Xbox store.

Does Diablo 4 have crossplay? Yes, for online play. The Xbox store lists Xbox cross-platform co-op, Nintendo's Switch 2 listing promises full cross-progression and cross-play with an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription, and our Steam data shows Cross-Platform Multiplayer. Couch co-op itself still means two people on one Xbox or PlayStation.

What is Diablo 4 rated? M for Mature 17+. The Xbox store lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence and Language, and the PlayStation Store adds In-Game Purchases and Users Interact. For a sofa with younger children, the stores' E and E10+ couch games are the place to look instead.

Can you play Diablo 4 couch co-op on PS4 or Xbox One? Windows Central and Dexerto both list PS4 and Xbox One next to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for couch co-op. The Xbox listing names Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S under Play with, and the PlayStation Store page that lists 1 - 2 players covers both PS4 and PS5.
