Little Nightmares 3 Local Co-op? No, Online Only for Two

Little Nightmares 3 local co-op does not exist: every store lists one player per console, and Bandai Namco says co-op is online, Friend's Pass for two.

TL;DR: The Xbox store lists online co-op 2-2 with no local field and no Shared/split screen label. Nintendo lists Single system (1) and Online (2) on Switch and Switch 2. The PlayStation page says "online co-op is the only available multiplayer mode". Bandai Namco: "coop is online". Checked Oct 24, 2026.

Two people can play the whole story, but not on one sofa with one screen. Little Nightmares 3 local co-op does not exist on any store, so the decision is whether both players have a console and an internet connection.

As of Oct 24, 2026: Xbox, Nintendo and PlayStation pages re-read that day; Steam fields from our Oct 18 store data. The Little Nightmares III game page shows the latest check.

Key Takeaways

  • No local co-op anywhere. Every store lists one player per console.
  • Online for two. Xbox online co-op 2-2; Nintendo Online (2); PlayStation up to 2 online.
  • One copy is enough. The Friend's Pass covers the second player.
  • No crossplay across brands. Only Switch and Switch 2 play together.
  • A co-op save stays co-op. Same two players to the end.

Little Nightmares 3 local co-op? (quick answer)

No. Little Nightmares III has two-player co-op, but only online. Bandai Namco's own Q&A puts it in one line: "In Little Nightmares III, coop is online, you will therefore need an internet connection."

Four store rows for Little Nightmares III: Xbox online co-op 2-2 with no local field and no Shared/split screen label, Steam Online Co-op only, Nintendo Single system (1) and Online (2), PlayStation 1 player and up to 2 online Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Xbox, Steam, Nintendo and PlayStation stores, checked Oct 24.

The stores agree. The PlayStation page goes further than most: "Note: online co-op is the only available multiplayer mode for Little Nightmares III." Our split screen vs shared screen explainer covers how each store marks the difference.

Overview

The game came out on October 10, 2025, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Switch 2, PS4, Xbox One and Switch, per Bandai Namco. Supermassive Games developed it, per the Xbox catalog.

We checked the Xbox listing attribute by attribute. It lists online co-op for two, single player and a handful of display features; local co-op, local multiplayer and the Shared/split screen label are all absent.

Desk note: 49 of the 276 games in our database list online play and no local play on any store, and Little Nightmares III is one of them. The other 223 list at least some local play. If your co-op happens on one sofa, this game sits in the small group to skip.

Analysis

Co-op is new to the series. Bandai Namco's launch news invites you to escape "for the First Time in the Franchise, with a Friend in Online Co-op". It arrived, but only online.

Diagram of two consoles, each with its own screen, joined online: one player owns the game, the friend uses the Friend's Pass on the same platform Diagram: CouchCoopDesk, from Bandai Namco's Q&A and the PlayStation page, checked Oct 24.

The Friend's Pass softens the cost. Bandai Namco says "only one copy of the game is required to enjoy Little Nightmares III with a friend." The PlayStation page adds that the other player "needs to download the Friend's Pass on the same platform", and that PS Plus is required for online play.

Crossplay is narrow. Bandai Namco's Q&A says "Cross-platform between different manufacturers will not be supported." Its January 2026 update added one bridge: "NSW and NSW2 cross gen multiplayer enabled." So a Switch owner and a Switch 2 owner can team up; a PS5 owner and an Xbox owner cannot.

One more rule matters for a pair. Bandai Namco says a co-op save "needs to be finished in co-op with the same two players". You cannot drop to solo halfway, though there are up to 8 saves.

Press read the same thing. Gaming Bible's review notes the display "doesn't awkwardly shift to split-screen when you stray too far apart", because there is no shared screen at all. GameRant says the game "only features online multiplayer co-op between two players on the same platform."

What players say

The couch question came up before launch. In r/LittleNightmares, a parent wrote that "my 12 yo daughter like watching me playing horror games and little nightmares is her favorite", in a post titled "Disappointed with Little Nightmares 3 multiplayer." On Steam's discussion board, one thread's title says it plainly: "No Split Screen, No Buy".

Our take

Skip Little Nightmares III for one-screen nights; buy it when both players own a console of the same brand. No store lists local play, and Bandai Namco says co-op is online. One copy plus the Friend's Pass covers two.

For two people on one screen, pick from our Game Pass split screen games or the finder instead. We will re-check if Bandai Namco ever adds local play; its update notes so far fix online play.

What we don't know yet

Whether local co-op will ever come. Bandai Namco's updates to date add cross-gen play on Switch and fix online co-op; none mentions a shared screen. We also could not read a current Steam page from our network.

How we checked this

We re-read the Xbox catalog entry, both Nintendo listings and the PlayStation page on Oct 24, along with Bandai Namco's Q&A, launch news and January 2026 update notes. Steam fields come from our importer's Oct 18 read. Gaming Bible and GameRant were read the same day; the GameRant line comes from its search summary. Reddit and Steam forum lines come from search results, since the Arctic Shift archive was rate-limited on Oct 24. We did not play Little Nightmares III for this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Little Nightmares 3 have split screen? No. No store lists it: the Xbox store shows online co-op 2-2 and no Shared/split screen label, Nintendo lists Single system (1), and the PlayStation page says online co-op is the only available multiplayer mode. Bandai Namco's Q&A says co-op is online and needs an internet connection.

Can two people play Little Nightmares 3 on one console? No. Each player needs their own console and screen. Nintendo lists Single system (1) on Switch and Switch 2, the PlayStation page lists 1 player, and Bandai Namco says co-op is online. On one console you play alone, with an AI companion that Bandai Namco's January update calls the Playpal.

How does the Little Nightmares 3 Friend's Pass work? Bandai Namco says only one copy of the game is required to play with a friend, thanks to the Friend's Pass. The PlayStation page adds that the other player downloads the Friend's Pass on the same platform. Both players still play online, each on their own console and screen.

Is Little Nightmares 3 crossplay? Only between Switch generations. Bandai Namco's Q&A says cross-platform play between different manufacturers will not be supported. Its January 2026 update notes list Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 cross-gen multiplayer as enabled. A PS5 player and an Xbox player cannot team up in co-op.

Can you switch between solo and co-op in Little Nightmares 3? Not in the same save. Bandai Namco says a game started in co-op has to be finished in co-op with the same two players, and you cannot go from solo to co-op in one save. You can start a new save with another friend or alone; there are up to 8 saves.

How much is Little Nightmares 3? $39.99 regular price on Nintendo's Switch and Switch 2 listings and $39.99 launch price on the PlayStation page, checked Oct 24. We did not quote an Xbox price, because the Xbox catalog prices the Deluxe Edition at $59.99 and lists more than one edition of the game.
