Gears of War: E-Day Split Screen: 2 Players, Console Only

E-Day split screen seats two players on one Xbox console, not on PC, per the Xbox store. Online co-op takes four across Campaign, Horde Siege and Versus.

Two people can share one Xbox for Gears of War: E-Day, but not one PC. The Xbox store prints E-Day split screen as "available for console only", so pick the console if you want the sofa.

TL;DR: The Xbox store lists Xbox local co-op (2-2) and Online co-op (2-4) for Gears of War: E-Day, and says two-player split-screen is for console only. Online, four play across Campaign, Horde Siege and Versus, with a Game Pass tier needed on console. $69.99 regular price on the Xbox store, and in the Game Pass catalog. Checked Oct 21, 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Two on the couch. Xbox local co-op (2-2): one console, two players.
  • Console only. The store's own words: "2-Player Split-Screen: is available for console only."
  • Four online. Online co-op (2-4) across Campaign, Horde Siege and Versus.
  • Membership for online. Online multiplayer on console needs Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate.
  • One seat fewer than Gears 5 on the couch: its Xbox listing says local co-op 2-3.

Overview

Gears of War: E-Day launched worldwide on October 6. Xbox Wire lists it on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass and Steam. The official Gears site sums up the co-op in one line: play "alone, side by side in split-screen co-op, or rally up to four players online."

Bar chart of Gears of War: E-Day on the Xbox store: local co-op 2-2, online co-op 2-4 Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Microsoft Store catalog, checked Oct 21, 2026.

Here is what the Xbox store lists:

Xbox local co-op2-2
Xbox local multiplayer2-2
Online co-op2-4
Online multiplayer2-12
Shared/split screen labelYes
Xbox cross-platform multiplayerYes

The local fields match the store text: "two-player split-screen". Two players, one TV, and the store stops counting there.

E-Day split screen: console only, in Xbox's words

The store description ends with a short list of notes. One of them settles the PC question: "2-Player Split-Screen: is available for console only." Xbox Wire's launch post repeats the same line word for word.

Diagram of three setups: an Xbox console with a split TV for two players, a PC with no split-screen, and online play for up to four Diagram: CouchCoopDesk, from the Xbox store and Xbox Wire pages cited below, checked Oct 21, 2026.

There is one wrinkle. The Microsoft Store catalog data behind the page tags the Shared/split screen label for both Xbox and Desktop. The written note says console only, and that is what we go with. A label is a checkbox; the note is a sentence someone wrote about this game.

PC players have noticed. A 2026 post in r/GearsOfWar is titled "The splitscreen mod for E-Day on PC works wonderfully!" That is a third-party mod, not a feature of the game, and we do not count it.

Online co-op, Game Pass and crossplay

Online, the store says you can "rally up to four players online across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus." Its Online co-op field reads 2-4, and Online multiplayer reads 2-12.

On console, online play has a price on top of the game. The store says: "Online multiplayer on console requires XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate (subscriptions sold separately)." Our split screen vs shared screen vs online co-op explainer covers how each console ties memberships to online play.

Crossplay is listed: the store shows Xbox cross-platform multiplayer. Xbox Wire adds that with Xbox Play Anywhere you can "play it on both console and PC at no additional cost". So a couch pair on Xbox can team up online with friends on PC.

Desk note: Of the 89 Xbox games in our database that list local co-op, 8 list exactly two on the couch and four or more online. E-Day joins Baldur's Gate 3, Diablo IV and Halo: The Master Chief Collection in that group. Two on the sofa, two more online: that is the shape of this kind of game.

Analysis

E-Day is a two-seat couch game in a series that once seated three. Gears 5's Xbox listing says local co-op 2-3. Gears of War: Reloaded lists 2-2, like E-Day.

Bar chart of Xbox local co-op across Gears games in our database: Gears 5 up to 3, Gears of War: Reloaded 2, Gears of War: E-Day 2 Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the official stores, checked Oct 21, 2026.

Against Reloaded, the online side grew: E-Day's Online co-op field reads 2-4, Reloaded's reads 2-2. Gears 5 still lists the most on both counts, 2-3 local and 2-5 online.

So the choice is about hardware, not the game. One Xbox and one TV: two players, split-screen, and the store's membership note covers online play only. A gaming PC: one player on that screen, more online. A group of four: everyone online, and on console everyone needs a Game Pass tier.

The ESRB rating is M. That matters for the family-couch crowd more than the split-screen question does.

What players say

One console pair is clearly happy with the couch mode. A 2026 r/GearsOfWar post about a crash puts it plainly: "we have been playing split screen on Series X (and loving it, game is amazing!)". The PC mod post above is the other half of the conversation.

Our take

Pick the Xbox version for couch co-op; on PC, plan on online co-op only. The store lists local co-op 2-2 and says split-screen is for console only. Online takes four, with a Game Pass tier on console.

If you need three on one couch, Gears 5 is the one whose Xbox listing says local co-op 2-3. Our best couch co-op games guide has more one-console picks. We re-read the E-Day listing at our next store check and update this page if a count changes.

What we don't know yet

Steam's own fields for E-Day. Steam's store page did not open for us, so we cannot say whether it lists Shared/Split Screen. We also have no official word on why the catalog tags its split-screen label for Desktop.

How we checked this

E-Day's player counts, labels, rating and price come from the Microsoft Store catalog, read by our importer on Oct 21. We read the Xbox store page, the Xbox Wire launch post of October 6 and the official Gears site the same day. Gears 5 and Gears of War: Reloaded come from our Oct 18 check. Reddit posts were read through the Arctic Shift archive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gears of War: E-Day have split screen on PC? Not officially. The Xbox store says 2-Player Split-Screen is available for console only, and Xbox Wire's launch post says the same. The store's catalog data tags its Shared/split screen label for PC too, but the written line is the official answer, and the PC mods people use are third-party.

How many players can play E-Day split-screen? Two. The Xbox store lists Xbox local co-op (2-2) and describes the mode as two-player split-screen. Gears 5, by comparison, lists local co-op 2-3 on the same store in our database, so the newer game seats one fewer player on the couch.

Is Gears of War: E-Day co-op four players? Online, yes. The Xbox store says you can rally up to four players online across Campaign, Horde Siege and Versus, and its Online co-op field reads 2-4. On one console the store's limit is two, so the other two players join online from their own console or PC.

Do you need Game Pass to play E-Day co-op? For online play on console, yes: the store says online multiplayer on console requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. Couch co-op on one console is local play. The game itself was in the Game Pass catalog on our Oct 21 check, at a $69.99 regular price to buy.

Is Gears of War: E-Day on PS5? Not at launch, as far as Xbox Wire says: its platform list names Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass and Steam, and no PlayStation. Windows Central reported in June that the game would stay on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. Gears of War: Reloaded is the Gears game with a PS5 listing in our database.

Does E-Day have crossplay? Yes. The Xbox store lists Xbox cross-platform multiplayer, and Xbox Play Anywhere lets one purchase cover console and PC, per Xbox Wire. Split-screen stays on the console, so crossplay is the way a couch pair joins friends on PC.
