Desk note: 145 games in our database sit on both the Xbox store and Steam. Only 11 carry Xbox's Shared/split screen label while Steam's page has none, and Don't Starve Together is one of them. For PC players, that gap is the whole answer.

Two or six: reading the Xbox numbers
The two Xbox fields disagree with each other. Local co-op reads 2-6; local multiplayer reads 2-2. Destructoid's 2016 report on the PS4 launch does not mention Xbox, but it says split-screen "can contribute to the overall six-player count."
GODEEPER: What the store's Shared/split screen label covers, and what it does not. Split screen vs shared screen vs online co-op
Our reading of the two numbers: plan on two people per TV, inside a server of up to six. The store does not say this in one line.
Chart: CouchCoopDesk, from the Xbox, Nintendo and Steam store data, checked Oct 25.
Split-screen online on Switch
Klei's page covers three setups: online, offline and LAN. For online play there is a catch: "both players using split-screen will need active Nintendo Switch Online memberships". One sofa, two subscriptions.
On Xbox, the store text says online multiplayer on console "requires XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate".
Tips for a two-player night
- Pick a console. Steam lists no split-screen for this game.
- Budget for online. Both Switch players need Switch Online.
- Two per TV. Nintendo lists Single system (1-2).
