Two people, one console, no teammates. Street Fighter 6 local multiplayer is head-to-head on every store, so the question is not whether a friend can join, but whether a beginner can keep up.

As of Oct 24, 2026: Xbox, Nintendo and PlayStation pages re-read that day; Steam fields from our Oct 18 store data. The Street Fighter 6 game page shows the latest check.

Key Takeaways

  • Two on one console. Every console store lists two players.
  • Versus, not co-op. No store lists a co-op field.
  • A handicap exists. The Advantage menu powers up one side.
  • Sixteen online. Xbox, Switch 2 and PlayStation list up to 16.
  • Switch 2 extras. Local wireless for 2, plus Joy-Con party modes.

Street Fighter 6 local multiplayer? (quick answer)

Yes, for two. Street Fighter 6 lists two players on one console on every console store we read. Capcom's manual describes One on One plainly: "Battle against the CPU, or another human player."

Four store rows for Street Fighter 6: Xbox local multiplayer 2-2 with no Shared/split screen label, Steam Shared/Split Screen PvP, Nintendo Switch 2 Single system 1-2, PlayStation 1-2 players Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Xbox, Steam, Nintendo and PlayStation stores, checked Oct 24.

It is a fight, not a team-up. The Xbox catalog lists local multiplayer and no local co-op field. Our Steam data shows the Shared/Split Screen PvP category, Steam's word for versus. Our split screen vs shared screen explainer covers how stores label both.

Overview

Capcom makes and publishes it, per the Xbox catalog. It launched in June 2023 and reached Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, per Nintendo.

PlayStation (PS4 and PS5)1 - 2 playersNo screen field on this storeUp to 16 with PS Plus$39.99 Standard Edition (Oct 24)

The stores agree on two. Where they differ is wording: Xbox says multiplayer, Steam says PvP, Nintendo and PlayStation print a count only.

Desk note: Our database sorts 276 games by what the stores print. 31 are versus only, and Street Fighter 6 is one of them; 142 are co-op only. If your sofa wants a shared goal, this is the wrong pick. If it wants a rematch, it is the right one.

Bar chart of 276 games in our database: 142 co-op only, 79 co-op and versus, 31 versus only, 24 not stated Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the official stores, checked Oct 18.

Analysis

The handicap is the couch feature. Capcom's manual says: "If you're playing against someone of a different skill level, you can power up your parameters via the Advantage menu." That is the setting to find before a first match with a newcomer.

Controllers can be shared. The same manual page says "You can also perform share controllers in this mode." On Switch 2 it adds that each side connects a Joy-Con 2 when picking P1 and P2.

Bigger groups take turns. Capcom's manual describes Team Battle: "Form teams containing between one to five members and hold team matches, pitting the blue team versus the red team." Still two on screen at once; the rest wait their turn.

Switch 2 adds party modes. Nintendo's listing names "Local Wireless One on One and Avatar Matches" as exclusive to Switch 2. It also lists "Gyro Battle, and Calorie Contest where the player who burns the most calories wins!" CGMagazine's review counts "three new modes, such as local wireless and two throwaway but fun casual motion-control centric Joycon modes".

Tips for a first couch match

  • Open the Advantage menu. It powers up the newer player, per Capcom.
  • Try Team Battle for a crowd. Teams of one to five, two fighters at a time.
  • On Switch 2, bring Joy-Con. Gyro Battle and Calorie Contest use them.

What players say

We could not find a player quote about couch play we could verify. The Arctic Shift archive rejected our search on Oct 24, and the one Reddit thread we found was about online play. We will add a line on the next check.

Our take

Pick Street Fighter 6 for head-to-head nights for two; skip it if you want co-op. Every console store lists two players on one console, and no store lists a co-op field. The Advantage menu evens out a mismatched pair.

For a shared goal on one screen, see our Game Pass split screen games list instead. We will re-check prices and the Switch 2 listing in November.

What we don't know yet

Whether every crossplay pairing works offline as well as online. The Xbox listing marks cross-platform multiplayer and Nintendo shows a Cross-platform play tag, but neither says which platforms meet. We also could not read a current Steam page from our network.

How we checked this

We re-read the Xbox catalog entry, the Nintendo Switch 2 listing and the PlayStation Store page on Oct 24, plus Capcom's official web manual (Versus page, Switch 2 edition) and CGMagazine's Switch 2 review. Steam fields come from our importer's Oct 18 read. We did not play Street Fighter 6 for this article.
