Does Split Fiction Have Split Screen? Yes, Two on One TV
Does Split Fiction have split screen? Yes: Xbox and Steam print the label, Nintendo's text says split-screen, and every store stops at two players.
TL;DR: The Xbox store lists local co-op 2-2 and its Shared/split screen label, Steam lists Shared/Split Screen Co-op, and Nintendo's Switch 2 text calls it a "split-screen adventure". The PlayStation Store lists 1 - 2 players. Nobody seats a third, and nobody plays alone. Checked Oct 24, 2026.
Yes, two people can play the whole game on one TV. Does Split Fiction have split screen on every console? Every store we read seats exactly two at most, so the only choice is whether your partner sits beside you or joins online with the free Friend's Pass.
As of Oct 24, 2026: Xbox, Switch 2 and PlayStation listings re-read that day; Steam fields from our Oct 18 store data. The Split Fiction game page shows the latest check.
Key Takeaways
- Split-screen on every platform. Two stores print the label; Nintendo and EA print the word.
- Two players, never three. Xbox lists 2-2, Nintendo Single system (2), PlayStation 1 - 2.
- No solo mode. The Xbox store shows no single-player field.
- One copy covers two online. EA's Friend's Pass needs one owner.
- Switch 2 couch play needs four Joy-Con 2, per TechRadar's review.
Does Split Fiction have split screen? (quick answer)
Yes. Two players share one screen on Xbox, PC, PS5 and Switch 2. EA's features page says "This split-screen adventure is tailored for two", and Nintendo's Switch 2 listing uses the same sentence. The Xbox store adds its Shared/split screen label; Steam carries Shared/Split Screen Co-op.
Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Xbox, Steam, Nintendo and PlayStation stores, checked Oct 24, 2026.
The PlayStation Store never prints a screen field, for any game. Our split screen vs shared screen explainer covers what each store does print. On PS5 the split-screen answer comes from EA's page, not from a checkbox.
Overview
Split Fiction is Hazelight's co-op adventure, published by EA. The Xbox catalog dates it March 6, 2025; the Switch 2 version followed that June 5.
Here is what each store showed:
| Store | Players on one console | Screen | Online | Regular price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox store | Local co-op 2-2 | Shared/split screen label | Online co-op 2-2 | $49.99 (Oct 24) |
| Steam | Shared/Split Screen Co-op category | Label plus Remote Play Together | Online Co-op | $49.99 (Oct 18) |
| Nintendo (Switch 2) | Single system (2) | Text: "split-screen adventure" | Online (2) | $49.99 (Oct 24) |
| PlayStation Store | 1 - 2 players | No screen field on this store | PS Plus required | $49.99 (Oct 24) |
The stores agree for once. Two seats, one price.
The PlayStation row is the only one that starts at 1. That is the store's format, not a solo mode: the Xbox store lists local co-op 2-2 with no single-player field. EA's help page calls it "a co-op action-adventure game".
Desk note: 56 of the 160 Xbox games in our database list exactly two local players, as Split Fiction does. 74 seat three or more. A couple is the target audience here; a family of three needs another game, such as those in our Game Pass split screen games list.
Analysis
The interesting part is not the split-screen. It is how many ways two people can play.
Diagram: CouchCoopDesk, from the store listings and EA's Friend's Pass pages, checked Oct 24.
One TV. Both players on the sofa, one copy, two controllers. This is the setup every store lists.
Two screens, one copy. EA says the Friend's Pass "lets two players play together online as long as one player owns the game." The Xbox store adds that the pass requires "persistent internet connection". On console, EA says "both players will need PlayStation®Plus or Xbox Game Pass to play together online."
Two Switch 2 consoles in one room. Nintendo's listing reads Local wireless (2). TechRadar's review says local wireless does "seem to require your friend to own Split Fiction", while hosting through GameShare does not.
GODEEPER: The two-player games that list a seat on one console, store by store. Couch co-op games for couples
Crossplay covers most pairs. EA's help page names PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Friend's Pass included. Its features page adds Switch 2: "Crossplay on PS, Xbox, NS2 & PC".
The Friend's Pass has a couch angle too. The Xbox listing says two owners of the free pass can "try the early stages of the game in couch co-op". EA's help page puts the free part at the first two levels, with progress carried to the full game.
The Switch 2 catch: controllers
TechRadar's Switch 2 review says you "cannot play Split Fiction with just one set of Joy-Con 2 controllers, like you can with other Nintendo co-op games." Each player needs a full controller. The review also found the couch option simple: "just select the 'Play Local' option."
That is the hidden cost on one console. Nintendo's listing does not mention it, so check your drawer before game night.
Steam players have one more route. Split Fiction carries Remote Play Together in our Steam data, which streams a local game to a friend who does not own it. Our Steam Remote Play Together explainer covers how that works.
What players say
Players ask about the Friend's Pass, too. In r/Steam, one reply sums it up: "You don't 'gift' the Friend Pass. Anyone can download that version of the game. They can play it by joining someone who bought it."
In r/SplitFiction, a thread asking for help with one feature quotes EA's rule: "Players with the Friend's Pass can only play the full game when in an online session with someone that has purchased the full game." So the full game on one TV needs one full copy.
Our take
Buy one copy for the couch; add the free Friend's Pass only for online partners. Every store lists two seats on one screen. The Xbox store, Nintendo's listing and the PlayStation Store all show $49.99 at regular price.
Skip it for a group of three: no store seats a third. On Switch 2, budget for a second pair of Joy-Con 2 before you start. We will re-check the store fields with our weekly store run.
What we don't know yet
Whether the free Friend's Pass levels work over Switch 2 local wireless. EA's help page lists the pass for PC, PS5 and Xbox, while its features page names Switch 2 for crossplay. Neither page spells out the Switch 2 local wireless case.
How we checked this
We re-read the Xbox catalog entry, the Xbox Friend's Pass listing, Nintendo's Switch 2 listing and the PlayStation Store concept page on Oct 24. Steam fields come from our importer's Oct 18 read; Steam store pages do not load from our network. EA's help and features pages and TechRadar's Switch 2 review were read the same day. Reddit lines come from search results; the Arctic Shift archive was rate-limited on Oct 24. We did not play Split Fiction for this article.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you play Split Fiction split screen on PS5? Yes. The PlayStation Store lists 1 - 2 players and prints no screen field, as it never does, but EA's own features page calls Split Fiction a split-screen adventure tailored for two. The game does not seat a third player on any store we read on Oct 24, so plan on a pair.
Does Split Fiction have split screen on Switch 2? Yes. Nintendo's Switch 2 listing reads Single system (2), Local wireless (2) and Online (2), and its description says this split-screen adventure is tailored for two. TechRadar's Switch 2 review adds that couch play needs two sets of Joy-Con 2 controllers, not one pair split between two people.
Can you play Split Fiction single player? No. Every store we read lists two players: the Xbox store shows local co-op 2-2 and no single-player field, and Nintendo lists Single system (2). EA describes it as a co-op game for two, so plan on a partner, either on the sofa or online with the free Friend's Pass.
Does the Friend's Pass work for couch co-op? Only for the opening. The Xbox store says the Friend's Pass lets two owners of the pass try the early stages in couch co-op or online. For the whole game, EA says the pass works online, as long as one of the two players owns the full game on their platform.
Is Split Fiction crossplay? Yes. EA's help page says two players can play together on different platforms, including with the Friend's Pass, on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. EA's features page adds Switch 2 to the crossplay list. On console, EA says online play needs PlayStation Plus or Game Pass.
How much is Split Fiction? $49.99 regular price on the Xbox store, the Switch 2 listing and the PlayStation Store, checked Oct 24, and $49.99 on Steam in our store data from Oct 18. The Xbox store lists the Friend's Pass as free, and EA says it lets a friend play with you for free, so an online partner costs nothing.
