Sackboy: A Big Adventure, one of the games in this guide.

Rocket League lists eight local co-op players on Xbox and one per system on Switch. So the best couch co-op games depend on the console under your TV: pick that first, then the game.

TL;DR: 25 picks, five for each store, every one with the player count the store itself prints. Two or more players on one console: 61 of 81 PS5 games in our database, 124 of 154 on Xbox, 37 of 42 on Switch 2, 153 of 173 on Switch, and 136 of 205 Steam games by category. On 21 games the console stores print different same-console counts. Checked Oct 18, 2026.

As of Oct 18, 2026: player counts, labels and prices as the stores listed them that day. Stores change listings; the finder shows the latest check.

Verdict: Pick Sackboy: A Big Adventure on PS5, Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Xbox, Super Mario Bros. Wonder on Switch 2, Luigi's Mansion 3 on Switch and Portal 2 on PC. Skip Rocket League on Switch for one TV. Store pages checked Oct 18.

Key Takeaways

  • Each store prints its own field. PlayStation gives "players", Xbox gives "local co-op (2-4)", Nintendo gives "Single system", Steam gives a category with no number.
  • The original Switch has the most one-console listings in our data: 153 of 173.
  • 21 games change their same-console count from one console store to the next. Terraria lists 2-8 local co-op on Xbox and 1 per system on Switch.
  • Four seats are common, not universal. 92 Switch listings, 67 on Xbox, 31 on PS5 and 22 on Switch 2 reach four or more.
  • Memberships cover online play. PS Plus, Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online are tied to online multiplayer, not to a second controller on the sofa.

Overview

Bar chart of games with two or more players on one console, by store: PS5 61 of 81, Xbox 124 of 154, Switch 2 37 of 42, Switch 153 of 173, PC on Steam 136 of 205 Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the official stores, checked Oct 18, 2026.

Every pick below comes from one rule. A store has to print two or more players on one console, or Steam has to carry its Shared/Split Screen Co-op category. A store's own text also has to describe the game as co-op. Then we picked five per store for different sofas: a family of four, a couple, a party, a budget night, a story.

The stores do not speak the same language. The PlayStation Store prints a plain player count, such as "1 - 4 players", with no word on whether those players cooperate or compete.

The Microsoft Store splits "Xbox local co-op" from local multiplayer and adds a "Shared/split screen" label. Nintendo prints three lines: Single system, Local wireless and Online. Steam prints no count at all.

So a "4-player co-op game" is a claim no single field makes. We say which store said what, and the game finder does the same for every game we track.

Desk note: 137 games in our database have a same-console count on two or more console stores. On 21 of them the numbers disagree. Same game, two stores, two answers: check the row for the console you own.

Hardware sets a ceiling too. PlayStation's support page says a PS5 takes up to four controllers at the same time. Nintendo of America says a Switch 2 connects up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances. The Xbox support page we tried gave no controller count, so we do not state one.

New to the store words? Our explainer on split screen vs shared screen covers each label, and the platform comparison shows how often each store prints each field.

Best couch co-op games on PS5

The PlayStation Store lists a player count and, separately, how many can play online and whether that needs PS Plus. 61 of the 81 PS5 games in our database list two or more players. Prices are the base price on the PlayStation Store's Add to Cart button on Oct 18. Full list: PS5 couch co-op games.

1. Sackboy: A Big Adventure

2. It Takes Two

Analysis

Bar chart of games with four or more players on one console: PS5 31, Xbox 67, Switch 2 22, Switch 92 Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the official stores, checked Oct 18, 2026.

Four seats are where the stores split apart. The original Switch has 92 listings that reach four or more on one console, Xbox 67, PS5 31 and Switch 2 22. Some of that is shelf size: we track 173 Switch listings and 42 on Switch 2. Some of it is hardware, since a PS5 takes up to four controllers, so four is the ceiling for nearly every PS5 game.

Bar chart of five games whose same-console count changes by store: Rocket League, The Jackbox Party Pack 9, DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO, Goat Simulator 3 and Brotato Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the official stores, checked Oct 18, 2026.

The differences are not small. The Jackbox Party Pack 9 lists up to 10 players on PS5 and Xbox and one on Switch. DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO goes the other way: 2 on PS5 and Xbox, 6 on both Nintendo listings.

Goat Simulator 3 lists four on PS5 and Xbox and two on Switch and Switch 2. Ten party players on one store, one on another. Nobody told the stores they were selling the same game.

Online play has its own gate on every console. PlayStation says most PS4 and PS5 games need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. Xbox says online console multiplayer requires Game Pass, and that free-to-play multiplayer is open to every Xbox player.

Nintendo says a Switch Online membership is required for online features. A second controller on the same console is not online play, which is why the picks above lean on the one-console count.

Prices are a dated snapshot. Every price in this article is the store's regular price on Oct 18, before any sale. The cheapest picks are on Steam: Portal 2 at $9.99, then Stardew Valley and Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime at $14.99.

Split-Screen Answers

Only 24 of the 270 games in our database use the word split-screen in a store description. Those games are on the split-screen games list, and shooters among them are on the split-screen shooters list. Answers for single games, such as whether a given game splits the screen on PS5, will sit here as we publish them. Each one will cite a store or publisher page that prints the word.

New Co-op

The upcoming co-op calendar holds 53 store listings with a future release date and two or more players, mostly from Nintendo's "Coming soon" pages. It has a calendar feed you can subscribe to, so new co-op releases land in your own calendar. Monthly roundups of new co-op games will be linked here once they publish.

What players say

Players say the same thing the data does: the platform comes first. One r/couchcoop comment from 2025 reads: "My wife and I play on PS5 the most, but Switch pretty often and we play couch co-op games all the time". Another, from 2023, on one of the PS5 picks: "get Haven by the game baker's on PS5, it's probably the best couch co-op game I've ever played with my wife."

On PC, one comment from 2026 skips the debate: "For me and my husband the GOAT couch co-op is Portal 2."

Our take

Pick the console first: start with Sackboy, Halo, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Luigi's Mansion 3 or Portal 2. On 21 games the console stores disagree on how many fit on one console. Terraria seats eight on Xbox and one on Switch.

If you own two consoles, compare the game pages before you buy; the "Where the consoles differ" box shows each store's number. If you want a count rather than a pick, use the finder. We re-read every store with each weekly data refresh, and these picks get a fresh check every 30 days.

What we don't know yet

PlayStation and Nintendo print no split-screen field, and Xbox and Steam print one label that covers both split and shared screens. For most games we cannot tell you how the screen is divided. Where a store's description or the publisher says it, the game page shows that page.

How we checked this

Player counts, store labels, ESRB ratings and regular prices come from the Microsoft Store catalog, nintendo.com product pages, PlayStation Store pages and Steam's store data, read by our importer on Oct 18 and kept in our database. Steam data was read on a server where Steam resolves.

Controller limits come from PlayStation and Nintendo of America support pages; membership rules from PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo pages; quotes from EA and Nintendo pages. Reddit comments were read through the Arctic Shift archive. We did not play these games for this guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best couch co-op game on PS5? For four players on one PS5, start with Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The PlayStation Store lists 1-4 players, and it was in the PlayStation Plus catalog when we checked. For two, It Takes Two lists 1-2 players, and EA's FAQ says couch co-op needs no internet connection.

Which console has the most couch co-op games? In our database the original Switch does: 153 of its 173 listings show two or more players on a single system. Xbox follows with 124 of 154, and Steam has 136 of 205 games with its Shared/Split Screen category. PS5 has 61 of 81 and Switch 2 has 37 of 42.

Does Rocket League have split-screen on Switch? Not by Nintendo's listing. The Switch page shows Single system (1), with up to eight players over local wireless or online. The Xbox store lists local co-op for 2-8 players and carries its Shared/split screen label, so the same game seats very different numbers on one TV.

Can you play couch co-op on Steam Deck? Yes, with a dock and a TV. Valve's Deck page says its USB-C port can drive a TV or monitor, which makes a docked Deck the shared screen. In our data, 126 of the 136 Steam games with the Shared/Split Screen category are rated Verified or Playable for Steam Deck.

Do I need PS Plus, Game Pass or Nintendo Switch Online for couch co-op? Each membership is tied to online play. PlayStation says most PS4 and PS5 games need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, Xbox says online console multiplayer requires Game Pass, and Nintendo requires a Switch Online membership for online features. Two players sharing one console are not playing online.

How many controllers can a PS5 or Switch 2 connect? PlayStation's support page says a PS5 takes up to four controllers at the same time. Nintendo of America says a Switch 2 connects up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances. With a Bluetooth audio device connected, the Switch 2 limit drops to two wireless controllers.
