Minecraft Dungeons 2 Split Screen: Up to 4 on One TV

Minecraft Dungeons 2 split screen: every console store lists up to 4 players on one console. New in the sequel, a couch party can bring friends in online.

TL;DR: Xbox lists local co-op 2-4, the PlayStation Store 4 players, Nintendo Single system (1-4) on both Switch listings. Xbox and Steam print their Shared/split screen label. New in the sequel: a couch party can go online and fill its open seats. $29.99 regular price on every store. Checked Nov 1, 2026.

Minecraft Dungeons II, one of the games in this guide.

Every console store lists four seats on one machine, yet the Minecraft Dungeons 2 split screen question has no plain yes from Mojang, which calls the mode couch co-op. Buy Minecraft Dungeons II on the console you already own: Xbox, PS5, Switch and Switch 2 all hold a party of four on one TV.

As of Nov 1: Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo and Steam store data re-read that day; every count matches our Oct 21 database row. The 4-player local games list shows the latest check.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 split screen? (quick answer)

Yes for four players on one console, with one caveat about the word. The Xbox store and Steam both print a Shared/split screen label, and every console store lists four seats on one machine. No Mojang page we read says "split-screen". Mojang says couch co-op means "playing together on the same device".

So the seats are certain and the layout is not spelled out. For a family deciding tonight, that is enough. Four controllers, one console, one copy.

How many players on one console, store by store

All four console stores agree on four. They just count it in different fields.

The PlayStation field says "4 players" and nothing about co-op. The description on that same page fills the gap: it promises "couch, online and mixed co-op", the line every store repeats. Nintendo counts from one because its Single system field includes solo play.

Switch owners get two separate listings, one for Switch and one for Switch 2, each at $29.99. Nintendo's Switch listing marks the Switch version as "Supported" on Switch 2, with behavior "consistent with Nintendo Switch".

On Xbox the game also sits in Game Pass: the store page read "Included with Game Pass" on Nov 1. Xbox Wire's August preview added Xbox Play Anywhere, so one purchase covers an Xbox console and a Windows PC. Our Game Pass split screen games guide covers the rest of that catalog.

Split screen or one shared view?

The labels cannot settle this, and Mojang has not. Xbox's Shared/split screen label and Steam's Shared/Split Screen category each cover two layouts: a TV cut into sections, or one view everyone shares.

GODEEPER: What the Xbox and Steam screen labels cover, and why one label fits both layouts. Split screen vs shared screen vs online co-op

The closest description comes from Microsoft, the publisher. Xbox Wire's gamescom preview explained a new mini inventory: press up on the D-pad for the full menu, hold it for a small overlay. The point, it said, is that "whole teams using a single screen" no longer wait while each player sorts items. Every player can open their own overlay at once.

That sentence describes a team on one screen. It does not say whether the picture divides. Some guides call the mode split-screen with no source, so read that word as theirs, not Mojang's.

Couch co-op can now go online

This is the real change for the sofa. Mojang's FAQ describes "mixed co-op, which allows two or more players on the same console or PC to fight alongside additional players online." The party still stops at four in total.

Mojang's Sep 29 co-op article explains the split. The game runs in an online mode and an offline mode, "with both modes supporting couch co-op." Offline is the simple choice for a family on one TV. Online mode lets two siblings on the sofa invite a cousin in another state, by friends list or by an eight-character party code.

Memberships follow that line. Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo print the same sentence: "Online console multiplayer/co-op requires a platform-specific online subscription." A couch party that stays in offline mode is not online play, so the line does not reach it. A mixed session on a console is online play, so that console needs Game Pass, PS Plus or Nintendo Switch Online.

Online sessions also moved to dedicated servers. In the first game the party leader hosted, and a weak connection slowed everyone; now a server is picked by each player's ping. Friends join by party code "regardless of which platform anyone is using," so the online seats can come from any console or PC. Our crossplay co-op list shows which other games do the same.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 split screen vs the first game

The seat count did not move: four on one console then, four now. Three store details did.

Minecraft Dungeons, the 2020 original, lists Xbox local co-op 2-4 but no Shared/split screen label in our Oct 18 data. The sequel carries the label. The first game's Xbox row also lacks the cross-platform co-op tag the sequel now shows.

The co-op article puts the change in plain words: in the first game, couch co-op "was offline only." A couch pair could not pull in a remote friend. Now they can.

Steam shows the other gain. The sequel lists Remote Play Together, which the first game's Steam page did not in our data. That Steam feature streams a local game from one PC so friends join over the internet with one copy, as our Steam Remote Play Together explainer shows. Since the sequel already has crossplay online co-op, Remote Play matters most when your friends do not own the game.

Desk note: Of the 17 games in our database sold on Xbox, PS5, Switch and Switch 2, only 7 list four players on one console at all four stores. Minecraft Dungeons II is one; Minecraft and Marvel Cosmic Invasion are two others. A household with mixed consoles loses no seat whichever version it buys.

Couch co-op on PC and Switch 2

PC is the awkward seat. Steam lists Partial Controller Support, not full, and couch co-op on one PC means several gamepads on one machine. One player on Mojang's feedback site asked on Oct 5 for a keyboard-plus-gamepad setup and wrote: "Currently, only two players can play in couch co-op if both are using a gamepad." That is a player's report, and the post had no reply when we read it on Nov 1. Plan on a gamepad for every player at the desk.

Steam Deck works with caveats. Valve rates it Playable, which its Deck Verified page defines as "may require some manual tweaking by the user to play", and Mojang's Oct 1 note names the missing on-screen keyboard.

On Switch 2 the four seats match the Switch listing exactly. Xbox, Nintendo and PlayStation all rate the game E10+, which puts it inside the E and E10+ range our co-op games to play with kids guide is built on.

When Minecraft Dungeons 2 couch co-op is not working

"Not working" shows up in search suggestions for this game's couch co-op, and Mojang's patch notes do list a couch bug. Update 1.1.3.0, posted Oct 22 for every platform, fixed a hard lock when a couch co-op party went back to the main menu from the Overworld. In that bug, the second player was kicked from the party while creating or selecting a hero.

Hero choice for the second player is the open sore. Mojang says you can "sign in with your own platform account on a friend's device and carry on with the hero you've been playing with," but only "if the platform supports it." It does not list which platforms do.

One player report says the default path is thinner. A post on Mojang's feedback site from Oct 5, with 6 votes when we read it on Nov 1, reads: "You cannot select previously created characters for Player 2." The same post says player two may only clone player one's hero or start fresh. That report predates the Oct 22 fix, and the patch notes do not say the cloning behavior changed.

So for a regular couch pair, sign the second player in with their own account where the console allows it. Their progress then lives with their account, which Mojang says is stored online.

Our take

Buy Minecraft Dungeons II on the console you own; every console store lists four seats on one TV for $29.99. Xbox, PlayStation and both Nintendo listings agree on four, and Xbox and Steam print the screen label. The online couch mode fixes the first game's biggest limit.

Skip the PC version for a couch night unless every player has a gamepad, given Steam's Partial Controller Support and the Oct 5 player report. Families who want each child's own hero in player two's seat should sign that child in or wait for Mojang to address the cloning report. Our game page shows the date of every store read.

What we don't know yet

Whether the TV divides. Mojang calls it couch co-op on one device, Xbox Wire describes "a single screen", and no official page we read shows or describes the layout in words. We also do not know which platforms let a second player sign in with their own hero.

How we checked this

We read the Xbox store page and Microsoft's catalog data, the PlayStation Store page and both Nintendo listings on Nov 1. Steam is blocked on our desk machine, so we read Steam's store data through its own API from our server the same day, and compared it with an archived copy of the Steam page from Oct 8. We read Mojang's three Dungeons II articles, its FAQ, its update notes and its public feedback site, plus Xbox Wire's gamescom preview. We did not play Minecraft Dungeons II for this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Minecraft Dungeons 2 on PS4 or Xbox One? No. The PlayStation Store lists the game for PS5 only, and the Xbox store lists Xbox Series X|S, PC and cloud, with no Xbox One. Mojang's own FAQ names Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Does Minecraft Dungeons 2 have cross-progression? Yes, through a Microsoft account. Mojang's co-op article says that linking your platform accounts to the same Microsoft account "will let you keep playing with the same hero" on another platform, and that hero data is stored online. On Xbox, Xbox Play Anywhere also covers a console and a Windows PC with one purchase.

Can you get the Hero Cape by joining a friend's co-op session? Yes, per Mojang's FAQ, if you log in with the same Microsoft account. The FAQ says you can receive the cape "by joining a friend's co-op session", without owning either game, and you must log into Minecraft Dungeons II before Dec 31. Mojang does not say whether couch sessions count. The cape also works in Minecraft: Java and Bedrock.

What does the Minecraft Dungeons 2 Deluxe Edition add? Cosmetics and the first two DLC packs. Mojang lists the Soul Cape, the Blub pet, four Fancy Hero skins and "DLC 1+2 (when released)". The Deluxe Edition costs $49.99 regular price on the PlayStation Store and Steam (checked Nov 1). Mojang says it includes the base game, so the co-op modes are the same.

Do you need to play the first Minecraft Dungeons first? No. Mojang's FAQ answers that question with "No, but returning players may spot a few familiar references!" The sequel is a separate purchase at $29.99 regular price on every store we read (checked Nov 1), and no store page lists the first game as a requirement.
