Two players can share one TV, but only on two consoles. Borderlands 4 split screen works on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so if your sofa is in front of a PC or a Switch 2, the plan has to be online.

As of Oct 24, 2026: Xbox, PlayStation and 2K pages re-read that day; Steam fields from our Oct 18 store data. The Borderlands 4 game page shows the latest check.

Key Takeaways

  • Two on one TV. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, per 2K.
  • No PC split screen. Steam lists online co-op only.
  • Four online. Across platforms, with a SHiFT account.
  • Uneven pairs work. 2K cites level scaling and individual difficulty.
  • Switch 2 is delayed. 2K's plan there was console-to-console play.

Borderlands 4 split screen? (quick answer)

Yes, for two, on two consoles. Borderlands 4 supports split screen on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. 2K's FAQ is precise: "Borderlands 4 supports up to 4-player co-op online* across all platforms, as well as 2-player splitscreen couch co-op on PlayStation®5 and Xbox Series X|S."

Four store rows for Borderlands 4: Xbox local co-op 2-2 with the Shared/split screen label, PlayStation 1-2 players with 2K's splitscreen wording, Steam online co-op only, Switch 2 delayed Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Xbox and PlayStation stores and 2K's FAQ, checked Oct 24.

The Xbox store says the same in its own fields: local co-op 2-2 and its Shared/split screen label. Its description adds "2-player splitscreen or up to 4-player online co-op." Our split screen vs shared screen explainer covers what each store field means.

Overview

Gearbox made it and 2K publishes it, per the Xbox catalog. The Xbox store lists Sept 13, 2025, and an M rating.

PC is the surprise for many buyers. 2K's FAQ lists only the two consoles for splitscreen, and our Steam data shows no local co-op category at all.

Desk note: Our split-screen shooters list holds 14 games. Eight of them stop at two players on one console, and Borderlands 4 is one, alongside Borderlands 3. Shooters on one TV tend to cap at a pair; for four on the sofa, the list has six other picks.

Analysis

Online is the bigger tent. 2K says Borderlands 4 supports "up to 4 players in online parties on the same platform or cross-platform". The footnote adds that "cross-play requires SHiFT Account" and that console online play needs a paid subscription.

Mixed skill is covered. 2K's FAQ says "level scaling and individual difficulty keeps the party together and having fun." For a couch pair where one player is new, that matters more than the seat count.

Bar chart of the 14 games on our split-screen shooters list: 8 seat two on one console, 6 seat three or four Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the official stores, checked Oct 18.

Switch 2 is on hold. 2K's Switch 2 announcement described "local play between multiple Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, and GameChat", which means one console per player. A September 2025 update to the same post says "the release of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 is being delayed."

Insider Gaming read the FAQ the same way: "To reiterate, split-screen gameplay is only available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S."

Tips before a split-screen night

  • Check the console. PS5 or Xbox Series X|S; not PC, not Switch 2.
  • Make a SHiFT account if any friend joins online from another platform.
  • Mind the rating. The Xbox store lists ESRB M (Mature 17+).

What players say

Console players asked the question before launch week was out. In a September 2025 r/Borderlands4 thread, the opening post said: "Buying once on console for two people sounds nice, but unsure if consoles are doing well in split screen." One reply from a Series S couple: "really stutters pretty bad and vending machines take 15-30 seconds to load each time". In r/Borderlands, a thread title reads "Borderlands 4 PC won't have Split-Screen coop, only ...", matching 2K's FAQ.

Our take

Pick Borderlands 4 for two on a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S; skip it for PC couch play. 2K's FAQ limits splitscreen to those two consoles, and Steam lists online co-op only. Online takes four across platforms.

PC players who want a sofa game should start with our couch co-op PC list. We will re-check when the Switch 2 version gets a date.

What we don't know yet

What the Switch 2 version will list for players on one console. 2K has delayed it and has not posted a new date. We also could not read a current Steam page from our network.

How we checked this

We re-read the Xbox catalog entry and the PlayStation Store page on Oct 24, along with 2K's Borderlands 4 FAQ, its Switch 2 news post and Insider Gaming's explainer. Steam fields come from our importer's Oct 18 read. Reddit lines come from the Arctic Shift archive of public posts, read Oct 25. We did not play Borderlands 4 for this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Borderlands 4 have split screen? Yes, for two players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. 2K's FAQ says Borderlands 4 supports 2-player splitscreen couch co-op on those two consoles. The Xbox store lists local co-op 2-2 with its Shared/split screen label, and the PlayStation Store lists 1 - 2 players.

Does Borderlands 4 have split screen on PC? No. 2K's FAQ names only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for splitscreen, and our Steam data shows Online Co-op but no local co-op or Shared/Split Screen category. On PC, co-op means online, up to four players, across platforms with a SHiFT account.

Is Borderlands 4 split screen on Switch 2? Not as far as 2K has said. Its Switch 2 announcement described local play between multiple Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, not one screen, and a September 2025 update said the Switch 2 release is delayed. The FAQ still says the Switch 2 version is coming soon.

How many players can play Borderlands 4 online? Four. 2K's FAQ says up to 4-player co-op online across all platforms, on the same platform or cross-platform. Cross-play needs a SHiFT account, and console online play needs a paid subscription. The PlayStation Store lists up to 4 online players with PS Plus.

Can a weaker player keep up in Borderlands 4 co-op? 2K says yes by design: level scaling and individual difficulty keep the party together. That means a newer player on the second controller is not stuck at the leader's difficulty. No store field describes this, so it comes from 2K's FAQ.

How much is Borderlands 4? $69.99 for the standard edition on the Xbox store, checked Oct 24, and $69.99 in our Steam data from Oct 18. The PlayStation Store page we read showed the Deluxe Edition with an original price of $99.99, so we do not quote a PlayStation standard price.
