Up to four people can play The Cat in the Hat: Rainy Day Mayhem on one console. For Cat in the Hat Rainy Day Mayhem split screen, only the Xbox store prints a label; on Switch or PS5 the count is the same four, the field just does not exist there.

Verdict: Pick the Xbox version if you want the split-screen label in writing. Pick Switch if the kids already share one; the store count is the same four. Skip it if you need online play. Store pages checked Oct 23.

Cat in the Hat Rainy Day Mayhem split screen? (quick answer)

On Xbox, yes by the store's own label: Shared/split screen sits next to Xbox local multiplayer (2-4). Nintendo and Sony list 1-4 players on one console and print no screen field at all. Pick any of the three for a family of four on one TV.

Key Takeaways

  • Four on one console, on every store we read. Xbox 2-4, Switch 1-4, PS5 1-4.
  • Only Xbox prints a screen label. Its catalog applies Shared/split screen to Xbox and Desktop.
  • Local multiplayer, not co-op. Nintendo's text says to "go against your friends".
  • No online play listed. The PlayStation Store notice reads "Offline play only".
  • $39.99 regular price on Xbox and Switch, checked Oct 23; out October 30.

Overview: one party game, three store listings

The Cat in the Hat: Rainy Day Mayhem is a Dr. Seuss party game from Outright Games, developed by Casual Brothers. It comes out October 30 on Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PS5, per the three stores' release fields and Outright's announcement.

Bar chart of players on one console by store: Xbox store 4 (local multiplayer 2-4, split label), Nintendo Switch 4 (Single system 1-4, no screen field) Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Xbox and Nintendo store listings in our database, checked Oct 23, 2026.

The game itself is a set of minigames around a house on a rainy day. Nintendo's listing describes "18 entertaining minigames" and a mode where you "find The Cat across 14 rooms". The Xbox store text also counts 18 minigames, and adds "Whether you play solo or with friends".

Outright's announcement sums up the player count: "Whether playing solo or with up to four players in local multiplayer". That is the publisher's word too: local multiplayer.

Here is what each store printed for the game on our check:

Xbox storeXbox local multiplayer (2-4)Shared/split screenNone listedOct 23
Nintendo (Switch)Single system (1-4)No screen field on this storeNone listedOct 23
PlayStation Store1-4 playersNo screen field on this store"Offline play only"Oct 23
Steam (Wayback copy, June)Co-op feature onlyNo Shared/Split Screen categoryNot listedJune 4 copy

The Xbox row is the only one with the word split. The Microsoft Store catalog behind it applies the Shared/split screen attribute to two platforms, Xbox and Desktop.

Nintendo's field never says how the screen is shared, for any game. Our split screen vs shared screen vs online co-op explainer covers what each store does and does not print. The PlayStation Store is the same: a player count, no screen field.

Where the stores disagree: 2-4 or 1-4

Xbox starts its count at two; Nintendo and Sony start at one. The top of the range is the same four on all three. The lower number only says whether the store counts solo play in the same line.

The bigger difference is the word on the Xbox field. Xbox has separate fields for local co-op and local multiplayer, and this game lists only the second. Nintendo's description matches: "Play solo or go against your friends, choosing from two trick-filled game modes." Its bullet list adds "Compete for rewards."

So read "four players" as four people playing against each other. If you wanted a game where the family wins or loses together, the store text does not describe one here.

Desk note: 32 of the 160 Xbox games in our database are rated E and list four or more players on one console. 19 of those 32 carry the Shared/split screen label, The Cat in the Hat: Rainy Day Mayhem among them. For a family of four on one Xbox, that label is the line to look for.

What about PC and Switch 2?

The Xbox store lists Xbox Play Anywhere, and its "Play with" list names PC. The catalog's split-screen attribute covers Desktop. But the Steam page we could read, a Wayback copy from June, listed only a Co-op feature and no Shared/Split Screen category. We would not count on split-screen on PC until a store page says so after launch.

For Switch 2, Nintendo's Switch listing marks compatibility as "Supported", adding that game behavior "is consistent with Nintendo Switch." We found no separate Switch 2 listing. The ESRB rating page names Nintendo Switch 2 among its platforms.

Analysis

Bar chart of Xbox games in our database: 32 of 160 are rated E with four or more players on one console, and 19 of those carry the Shared/split screen label Chart: CouchCoopDesk, data from the Xbox store listings in our database, checked Oct 23, 2026.

Four seats and an E rating is a short list on Xbox. The label is the only store field that speaks to how the TV is used.

The ESRB rates the game E for Everyone, with no content descriptors. Nintendo and the PlayStation Store print the same E. For a parent, that removes one question.

The open question is the play style, not the screen. Every source we read says solo or with friends, and the stores' own text leans to competing. Press coverage agrees on the count: TheXboxHub wrote "Play solo or with up to four players locally".

Our take

Pick the Xbox version if the split-screen label matters to you; otherwise buy where the controllers already are. Every store lists four on one console. The $39.99 regular price is the same on Xbox and Switch.

Skip it if you need online play or a game where everyone is on the same team; the stores list neither. We re-read the listings after launch and update this page if a count changes.

What we don't know yet

Whether the PC and Steam versions list split-screen once the game is out. The only Steam page we could read was a copy from June, before launch.

How we checked this

The Xbox and Nintendo fields come from our importer's read of the Microsoft Store catalog and Nintendo's listing on Oct 23. We re-read both store pages and the PlayStation Store page that day. Steam's page was read through a Wayback copy of June 4, because Steam does not load for us. We also read Outright Games' announcement and game page, the ESRB rating page and three press pages (TheXboxHub, Nintendo World Report, GoNintendo). We found no player discussion of the game on Reddit through the Arctic Shift archive. We did not play the game.
