Escape Academy 2 Split Screen: Yes, Two Players on One TV

Escape Academy 2 split screen is confirmed: the publisher's store text promises splitscreen couch co-op for two on Xbox, PS5 and PC. No Switch version yet.

TL;DR: Xbox lists local co-op 2-2 with its Shared/split screen label, and the PlayStation Store lists up to 2 players; online co-op also stops at two. Steam shows Shared/Split Screen Co-op but, unlike the first game, no Remote Play Together. $19.99 regular price on the Xbox store. Checked Oct 31, re-read Nov 1, 2026.

On the Escape Academy 2 split screen question, the publisher answers in plain words: its store text promises "splitscreen couch co-op" for two players. Pick the Xbox, PS5 or PC version for the sofa when it launches Nov 5; a Switch household has no listing to buy yet.

As of Nov 1: Xbox, PlayStation and Steam all re-read that day (about 01:00 UTC); no row in the table below changed since Oct 31. The Escape Academy 2 game page shows the latest check.

Xbox's Shared/split screen label and Steam's Shared/Split Screen category cover two layouts, a TV cut in two or one shared view, so the label alone never says which. Here the publisher settles it. The Xbox description, the PlayStation description and the iam8bit Presents page all say "splitscreen", and Xbox Wire's April recap of the ID@Xbox spring show wrote "split-screen couch co-op".

GODEEPER: What the Xbox and Steam screen labels cover, and why a store "split screen" can mean one shared view. Split screen vs shared screen vs online co-op

No store prints a third seat, and Steam's categories carry no number at all. Coin Crew's PlayStation Blog post of Oct 13 promised "couch or online co-op play available from the get go between the full campus, story and all of its puzzles." So the whole game is open to the second player, not a side mode.

Online co-op, crossplay and memberships

Online stops at two as well. Xbox's Online co-op field and the PlayStation Store's "Supports up to 2 online players with PS Plus" agree, and neither lists a third online seat.

Each console charges for that online seat. The Xbox page says online multiplayer on console requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. The PlayStation listing prints "PS Plus required for online play". Couch co-op on one console is local play, and neither store attaches a membership to it.

Crossplay depends on where you buy. Microsoft's catalog tags Xbox cross-platform co-op for both Xbox and Desktop, which in Microsoft's terms means an Xbox console and a Windows PC. Xbox Wire said the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere too. Steam's data shows no Cross-Platform Multiplayer category (read Nov 1), and the PlayStation Store prints no crossplay field at all. No store we read promises PS5-to-PC co-op, so a PS5 player and a Steam player should not plan on it.

Game Pass is the other Xbox route. Xbox Wire's April 23 recap said the game arrives "day one with Game Pass", and the Xbox page marked the standard edition "Coming to Game Pass" on Nov 1, with a "Coming to these subscriptions" row naming PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate. Our Game Pass split screen games guide already counted it among the queued couch games with the label.

The co-op promise reaches the paid add-ons too. The Deluxe Edition ($29.99 regular price on the Xbox store, checked Nov 1) bundles the Escape Academy 2 Season Pass, which Microsoft's listing describes as "two upcoming major expansions", each "entirely playable in single player or co-op with a friend - local or online!" It also adds the Mask-uerade pack of ten animal-themed masks. No release dates for the expansions appear on the page, and the standard edition at $19.99 already holds both seats. The Season Pass is an Xbox-store fact so far: the PlayStation Store page shows no Deluxe Edition or add-on, and Steam's DLC list on Nov 1 holds a soundtrack and a Supporter Pack, no pass.

Escape Academy 2 split screen vs the first game

The sequel keeps the original's two seats and changes three details around them.

Comparison card: both Escape Academy games list Xbox local co-op 2-2; the sequel is rated E against E10+, has no Steam Remote Play Together label and no Nintendo listing Chart: CouchCoopDesk. Source: sequel pages read Oct 31; first game and Steam data from our Oct 18 check.

Escape Academy, the 2022 original, carries the same Xbox seat fields as the sequel, local and online. So the seat count did not move. The sequel's listing says the first game was "enjoyed by over 4 million players".

The rating dropped a step. The Xbox store rates the sequel E, for Mild Fantasy Violence, Alcohol Reference, Mild Language and Comic Mischief, where the first game is E10+ on the same store. The PlayStation Store still shows the sequel's rating as pending.

Steam is where the sequel lists less. The first game carries Remote Play Together in our Steam data; the sequel did not on Oct 18, and Steam's own data still did not on Nov 1. That label lets one Steam owner stream a local game to a friend's PC, as our Steam Remote Play Together explainer shows. The store page is still pre-launch, so the label could be added at release. Steam also lists a free demo with the same Shared/Split Screen Co-op category.

Switch owners lose out. The first game sells there as Escape Academy: The Complete Edition, Single system (1-2), at a $29.99 regular price on Nintendo's store (checked Oct 18). For the sequel, both Nintendo store addresses we tried returned nothing, and the publisher's page names Steam, PlayStation and Xbox only.

One detail sets both games apart from their genre in our data. Among the six Xbox couch games filed under Puzzle & trivia, just two carry the Shared/split screen label: Escape Academy and its sequel.

Who should take the second seat

The sequel adds what the store text calls "the new optional No-Timer Mode", so "students of all backgrounds can puzzle at their preferred pace." Pixel Herald's write-up of the PS5 date describes the same mode. When one player solves faster than the other, that switch takes the clock out of the argument.

The E rating on Xbox opens the sofa to younger players too. Our co-op games for different skill levels guide rates two-player games on one fixed scale for a gap in skill, if your pair is uneven.

Desk note: Of the 91 Xbox games in our database that list local co-op, 13 list exactly two on the couch and two online, Escape Academy 2 among them. It Takes Two and Split Fiction share that shape. A pair loses nothing; a third friend needs a different game.

Bar chart: of 91 Xbox games with local co-op in our database, 13 list two on the couch and two online, 78 list another mix Chart: CouchCoopDesk. Source: Xbox store rows in our database, checked Oct 18 to Oct 28.

What players say

The sequel is not out yet, so the voices we found are about the first game. In r/XboxGamePass, a 2023 post asking for puzzle picks put it plainly: "Escape Academy (loved that it had couch co-op - that's a big plus)". Another 2023 post in the same subreddit, with 39 comments, came from a couple who had just finished it: "We’ve played It Takes Two and Escape Academy and loved them both."

Our take

Buy Escape Academy 2 on the console or PC you already own; every listed version promises split-screen for two. The publisher's "splitscreen" line sits on its own page and in the Xbox and PlayStation listings, and the Xbox Season Pass expansions promise local co-op too.

Skip it if three of you share the couch, because no store lists a third seat. A Steam pair in two houses who counted on Remote Play Together should wait and check the Steam page after Nov 5, since Steam's data on Nov 1 did not list it. Our game page shows the date of every store read.

What we don't know yet

Xbox One. Xbox Wire's April recap named it, but the Xbox page on Nov 1 still lists PC, Xbox Series X|S and Handheld under Play with. We found no statement explaining the change.

How we checked this

We read the Xbox store page and Microsoft's catalog data, and the PlayStation Store page, on Oct 31 and again on Nov 1. Steam fields from Oct 18 come from our importer; on Nov 1 we re-read them through Steam's own store API from a server where Steam resolves (Steam is blocked here, and the Wayback Machine refused our requests on Oct 31). We read iam8bit's page, the PlayStation Blog post and Xbox Wire's recap, and tried two Nintendo store addresses. Reddit posts came through the Arctic Shift archive. We did not play Escape Academy 2 for this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time does Escape Academy 2 come out? The PlayStation Store's data lists the release at 18:00 UTC on Nov 5, 2026, which is 1 p.m. Eastern and 10 a.m. Pacific. Microsoft's catalog ends the Xbox pre-order offer one second before that hour, so the two stores line up on the same unlock time.

Do you need to play the first Escape Academy before the sequel? No. Coin Crew's PlayStation Blog post says "Whether you played the first game or not, Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School is open to everyone." The store text adds that the new story "has something for new and returning players alike", and promises new teachers alongside familiar faces from the first game.

Is Escape Academy 2 enhanced for PS5 Pro? The PlayStation Store lists it as PS5 Pro Enhanced and Remote Play supported, as read on Oct 31. The listing does not say what the Pro version changes, and no Coin Crew or iam8bit page we read describes it, so treat the label as the only detail on record for now.

Will Escape Academy 2 work on Steam Deck? Valve had not rated it yet: our Oct 18 Steam data lists Deck compatibility as Unknown for the sequel. The first Escape Academy is Deck Verified in the same data, a rating Valve's Deck site defines as "The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box."

Can you play Escape Academy 2 solo? Yes. The Xbox store lists Single player next to its co-op fields, and the store text says "Play solo or grab a friend and start solving in online or local co-op." Our Steam data shows the Single-player category as well.
